BEACON
- Kate has contacted Charities Commission to let them know
Beacon is being wound up. We will have to send the documents
that Andrea has ready to say they have been officially dissolved. ,
once all money has been transferred out.
- Resolution signed by all trustees states to transfer all money to
NZFDC.
- Alan Bensley and Julie Patterson are two of the signatories on the
accounts according to Westpac it will be easier for a cheque to
be written to us instead of transferring money. As at 1/07/14, the
bank balance for Beacon was $32,550.41.
- Jill to contact Alan to organize cheque.
- Jill to bank cheque, and to contact Andrea and Kate when it clears.
Andrea to send Dissolving Form to Charities Commission.
CO-OPTION
- There are two people who put their hands up to be co-opted onto
the Committee they were Rebecca from Auckland and Justin
from Otago. We really only have 1 position to fill. Janet
mentioned Rebecca was backing down a bit from Auckland
Parents Group so probably not a good time for her to join.
- Kates recommendation is for Justin as we dont have a rep from
that area it is nice to have a male perspective / representation.
Be great to have a Dads point of view. And also Jill currently is

the only South Island Member, so good to get those numbers up.

PORTFOLIOS
Newsletter
- Kelly is doing a fabulous job with all of her roles, but feels she
cant do the newsletter as she just hasnt got the time. Kate has
happily put her hand up to take it on. Thanks Kate. Kelly to
forward t-stick and all information regarding newsletter to Kate.
Parents Hui
- Andrea has been attending the Hui meetings. Seems like the
logistics have changed and they want NZFDC to take registrations,
pay invoices, pretty much organize it all. Committees feedback?
Not happy. We only agreed on putting in a presence, and paying
invoices, but not organizing the whole thing.
- Kate to have a conversation with Carolyn Grace.
Hawkes Bay Gathering
- Need to have confirmation of who is flying, driving, staying
when/where. Please let Kelly/Andrea know your flying and
accommodation preferences.
- Kate and Kirstin to pay for half their villas as they are bringing
family.
- 10.30-2.00pm parents group gathering on Saturday.
- Split committee meeting Saturday afternoon 3-5pm, Sunday
morning 9am-12pm as an idea.
- They will arrange venue when they know where we will be staying.
BOP Update
- Getting so close.
- Constitution being signed off.
- Committee decided.
- Have over 16 people registered, and that is just the beginning.
- So much positive feedback.
- In the process of getting a logo sorted for our group is looking
amazing.
- Membership form to be sent out with changes in the next couple of
weeks.
- Definitely worth the hard work to get this up and running.

Secondary schools resources and tips

- 4 calls in last month from parents with teenagers transitioning to
secondary school. Secondary is very different to primary, with
one teacher for each subject rather than a single classroom
teacher. Taking the FM sround all classes, etc is a huge
challenge. Often parents struggle to get all teachers to the
Mainstream Teachers course, run by the DECs, where it was
previously easy for just one teacher to go. Kates suggestion
would be doing a brief for teachers of secondary school
teachers/classrooms. Two mums have mentioned their kids
want to help us write the report. Perhaps Lauren could add
some tips on what would have been helpful for her as she ends
her secondary school years.
Website
- Put some information up regularly from these above kids
pictures, phrases, whats happening, etc.
Phonak
- Kate has had contact with Mike in Auckland re sponsorship,
funding for NZFDC. If you get the opportunity to go to Phonak,
go and have a look at their offices it is awesome.
KDEC Conference 22 September
- Professional development for staff relationships between RTD,
Parents, Families, Teachers, etc. Kate asked to speak on the
panel as a parent. Kate happy to be a rep for NZFDC. Jill
asked to bring up communication at the conference, i.e.
doing things in a timely manner.
FCEI followup
- Kate has been in contact with Anne Porter regarding hints and tips
for parent groups. Kate has put up parts of her report to our
webpage. Adding links to our Facebook page, i.e. hands and
Page 3 of 12

voices. Leeanne Seaver is going to set up global parents

network which Kate has registered our interest
Northland Parents
- Kate got through to Leah Peterson from Northland Parents of Deaf
Children she is adamant they dont want anything to do with
NZFDC.
- Catherine to forward the details of any families signing up to
NZFDC in Northland on to Kate then she can follow up a
week after kits have been sent.
- One kit has been sent up to the AODC in the last three months.
- Its a shame that Northland Families are missing out due to
something that happened so long ago.
- We can contact Northland Families and say we are here, if there is
anything we can do. If there is a group of them that want us to
go and meet them, we are more than happy to head up.
Publishing Resources
- Kate has had a discussion with a principal asking about
resources. Can we publish our hints and tips, etc in pamphlet
forms to stick in our kit, to send to schools, to send out to
families? Is this something we can apply for specific funding?
Jill mentioned using Beacon money. Or some groups ask to
sponsor specific projects, not just give us money this would
be a good example, i.e. Phonak and we can put a blurb at the
end thanking Phonak and putting their logo on it.
Promotion of NZFDC
- Kate will contact Deaf Aotearoa for ideas on getting our profile out
there, making people aware of us, promoting ourselves, getting
information to audiologists, teachers, etc.
VistaPrint
- Kate has looked into the Committee having their own business
cards with individual names on it, and Federation email and
0800 number, Facebook logo, website please let Kate know if
there is anything extra you want added to it. Another way of
getting our name out there.
MOTION: That Kate to order business cards, updated pamphlets and
updated flyers to put up at audiology offices, resource

Summary

Secondary schools
resources/ tips

Recently there have been a number of calls through the 0800 number asking
for help with children transitioning from primary school to intermediate or to
secondary school.
Along with the newly diagnosed and the IEP tips that we are looking at, this
could also be an avenue. As time is always at a premium, I had a great
conversation with a few mums with amazing, eloquent and outgoing young
people who would be willing to put together some hints and tips on school
from their own perspective. I LOVE this idea, and think that this is something
we should really roll with for the teens. Their perspective is so much more
important than us, really, and its more relevant for the kids to hear from their
peers.
Work in progress

Website

I have been talking to a number of mums of teenagers recently, and have had
some wonderful information from two of our amazing young people who are
willing to put their perspective up on our website. The first is the DeafKid
Talking blog that I sent around. Both this wonderful young woman and her
mum are happy for us to put blurbs from her blog onto our page, and Id like
to do so when something comes up. Keep an eye on it people, its lovely.
The second person is a young man who we have been supporting for a
number of years, who has attached a wonderful blurb to his application for an
excellence award this year. I will be going further with both him and his mum
about getting some hints and tips as above.

Phonak

Kirstins lovely husband has met with Phonak in Auckland, and was kind

31 August 2014

enough to forward me the contact details. I have been in touch, and hopefully
will be able to meet with them either when I get up to Auckland or when they
come down her in October. I think this is a possible avenue to foster for
sponsorship and information gathering.
KDEC conference

I have been asked to speak on a panel at the annual KDEC conference in

Auckland on the 22nd September. This is to discuss opinions on best practice
for relationships in deaf education, so anything that comes to mind, please let
me know and I can pass on.

FCEI follow-up

I have been in contact with a lady from Australia regarding hints and tips for
parent groups, which I have emailed around the group.
I have also put up a report and part of my presentation onto our webpage.
Andrea, please forward any interest to me and I will contact them (I really
hope that people get in touch!)
I have been putting links on facebook from Hands and Voices in the US, and
info through from Leeanne Seaver, who I have been in contact with regarding
a Global Parents Network. This is going ahead in leaps and bounds, and as
soon as information comes this way I will share it. At the moment I have just
stated our interest to be a part of this group, and offered up help or time if
needed. Very exciting!

Northland Parents

I managed to get through to Leah Peterson from Northland Parents of Deaf

Children, to start seeing about opening up channels between them and
NZFDC. Leah was adamant that she doesnt want to have anything to do with
Federation due to some issues from many years ago. There isnt much we
can do about this save keep channels open and hope that we can eventually
get their families on board. It seems a shame that the families are missing
out.

Publishing resources

I have had an interesting discussion with a principal regarding resources for

teachers. I wonder if there is an option for us to publish our hints and tips
resource and get it out to families to give to their schools. This may be a prime
example of one of those things that we can apply for specific funding for.

Promotion of NZFDC

I havent had a change to get in touch with Deaf Aotearoa to ask about how
they promote themselves. This is something I will be working on this period.

Beacon

Yay! We have all the signatories back approving closing down Beacon. Once
the paper work is all together, I will fill out the forms for the Charities
Commission. I have been in touch letting them know that we are in the
process of dissolving the trust.

Meeting began with an itroduction of us all, and who we represented. Still

getting my head around how NFD is made up, know that NZFDC does
need a presence on it though. Hearing Assn members had had a meeting
with Lance Steven (who is board chair) Peter Thorne (council chair) and
Louise CEO this was to iron out some communication faults, wondering if
it maybe an idea with NZFDC. A memardium of understanding has been
signed with Deaf Aotearoa. In lance Stevens, report he commented on
NFD losing out on different grant applications. The closest funding
innovation happening to the meeting was The silent leadership
challenge.(At time of mtg $17 000 had been raised) Work is contining
from the captioing working group, they met the morning of the meeting
with Sue Stetman CEO of consumer NZ re captioning.Next NFD
magazine (due 1st week Sept) will have responsenes to NFD political
party manifesto.NFD Trust had an increase in applications for
scholarships and training development (Something I feel will increase)
Another group I feel its important for NZFDC to have a presecence at.
There is a CapTel brochure developed, I wondered if it was something
that would be useful included in the next newsletter mail out. There is a
link on our website to this, is there? I was asked to speak re relay service
etc, I responded that I felt there needed to be more publicity distrubuted
to parents of deaf children, in order for the families and the children to
access the different communications methods. Added also children with
other disabilities, especially speech affected children.
It was a privilege to represent NZFDC at this launch.Gary Williams was the
MC, Speakers were Lianne Dalziel, Dame Beverley Wakem, Chief
Ombudsman, Mary Schnackenberg, Chair of the NZ Convention
Coalition,Paul Gibson, Disability Rights Commissioner Ruth Dyson and Mojo
Majors were also there.. One change that has come about in the two years
this has been, being monitored, Mary said within her address, this years
election will be the first that she will be able to independently vote in. (Mary
said she has been voting since 1973) I will bring the two reports to table at
the meeting.

Feeddback from Kelly-In the future support??

Kelly Merrill-Jones

Here are some practical ideas that I would like to offer support with, if
the NZFDC think it is appropriate
(Although I won't at all be offended if there are already plans in place).
Work with professionals in some capacity to support the awareness of how
they interact with children and families.
If there is any event or information that you would like me to post on my Sign
a Rainbow FB page, I would be happy to help...just email me with the flyer or

Can I add Sign a Rainbow information to the Family Kits? Maybe something
practical like a signing board book or picture book?

Summary
Vibrating Clock for ************ this was approved, but they had a query
regarding fees and exchange rates, etc. Kate replied. No receipt has been
received to date. I have sent another email to them on 14/08 asking if they
are still wishing for this application to go ahead, and am awaiting a response.
Had an email back Monday 18 August saying the postage was going to be
more expensive than the clock, so they have put application on hold. I said I
would see whether any of your have contacts for vibrating clocks in NZ?
What is the update on her application form? I was in the middle of getting
Jacks CI done so you ladies kindly took over. Thanks.
