Any organism that can be observed only with the aid


of a microscope. Microrganisms include:

BACTERIA,

VIRUSES,

PROTOZOANS, and some

ALGAE and

FUNGI

Microbiology
The scientific study of microorganism. Originally
this was directed towards their effects (e.g. in causing
disease and decay), but during 20th century the
emphasis has shifted to their physiology,
biochemistry and genetics. Microbes are now
recognized as important vehicles for the study of
biochemical and genetic processes common to all
living organisms, and their rapid growth enables
their laboratory culture in large numbers for studies
in genetics.

Food microbiology is the study of food


micro-organisms; how we can identify
and culture them, how they live, how
some infect and cause disease and how
we can make use of their activities.
