By Aldosterone and
Hormone Replacement
Therapy

Stay Healthy...
What is Aldosterone and
its role ?

Aldosterone is a hormone produced in

the outer section (cortex) of the adrenal
glands which sits above the kidneys. The
role of aldosterone is it controls
reabsorption of salt from the nephron
tubules. Its primary function is to
increase the reabsorption of sodium ions
or potassium ions in blood and tissues
and for the maintenance of blood
pressure .
Causes /effects due to lack of
aldosterone and its symptoms
Hypoaldosteronism is a condition where
people fail to secrete aldosterone.
Individuals who cannot secrete
aldosterone are patients with Addison's
disease, when the adrenal cortex
produces insufficient amount of
hormones. With this disease too little
aldosterone are produced by the adrenal
glands. Addison's disease can occur in
any age, gender, anytime. It is a very
rare disease . It should be caught early
as it is life threatening. Addison's
disease can also result from autoimmune
disease, infections such as tuberculosis
or HIV, tumors ,or use of blood thinners.
The symptoms of Addison's disease are :
chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, low

Hormone Replacement Therapy

. Addison's disease is the name
of a disease with these
symptoms which include high
urine output with a resulting low
blood volume. Eventually, as
blood pressure falls, this can
result in heart failure. A
replacement hormone,
fludrocortisone (Florinef), is
used to treat this condition but a
careful monitoring must be
maintained to avoid fluid
retention and high blood
pressure. Corticosteroid
replacement therapy at
physiological doses (I.e. at
levels that are normal for the
body) is the treatment. Then the
aldosterone is administered as
the aldosterone replacement

So, get Hormone

Replacement Therapy if
you cannot secret
aldosterone.
