Instructional Sequence

Overview of the lesson The goal of this lesson is for students to learn the cause, effects and
solutions for acid rain. The students will do some reading and we will discuss the goals in light
of the reading.
Logistics We will need:
- textbooks
- SmartBoard, computer
- Limestone
- Mountain Dew/cup
Objective for lesson The objective of this lesson is for students to know the causes, effects and
solutions for acid rain.
HSCE C5.7D Classify various solutions as acidic or basic, given their pH.
C5.7h Explain why sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides contribute to acid rain.
Instructional Sequence:
Introducing lesson
In the introduction to lesson we will talk about what students already know about acid
rain. We will then watch a video clip about acid rain. Next we will do a brief
introduction to the pH scale so students can understand the reading. We will do
our Mountain Dew and limestone demo to explore what happens. Students will be
given prompts to think about while reading (Causes, Effects, Solutions) Reading
pg 363-366
Body of the lesson
After students complete reading we will construct a semantic map together. We
will discuss the causes, effects and solutions and students will come to the board
and write up their findings. Students will be called up using cards. After the
discussion is complete we will talk about the Chem Quandary2.
Concluding the lesson
To conclude the lesson we will talk about what has happened in the Mountain
Dew experiment. For a ticket to go we will do 2 questions from the back of the
section.
Assessment We will do a ticket to go which will consist of two questions from the back of the
book.
Back Up Activity Test review, double check that they have the correct info on their note card for
the test.
