ROOM 28

Term 3 Week 2 - The Week Ahead

Monday 27th 31st July

August is nearly upon us - I really cant believe how quickly this year is going.
A great first week from Room 28 and lots of enthusiasm shown towards their new learning. We enjoyed the
visit from The Science Roadshow which ignited a lot of curiosity and engagement towards our science theme
this term.
The dental van is at school this week and the children will be treated to pizza on Thursday during Break 1 (no
desert pizzas I hope!).
There is a winter exchange taking place on Tuesday afternoon and letters were sent out last week. The
children not involved in the exchange, will be working with other teachers left in school.
The ICAS English Exam will be held at 9:00am on Tuesday. Please make sure that all children are here on
time. There will be a catch up session on Friday if this is missed.
The children will all be presenting a 1-2 minute speech this week in class. The purpose of these speeches is
for the children to get a feel on what it is like to present to an audience and gain confidence in this area. We
have discussed the importance of choosing a subject of interest and how to go about organising. All children
were asked to be ready for Monday, although I have emailed each of them to sign up for a slot if they wish.
After our practise speeches this week, we will focus on how to present our speeches effectively, using what
we have learnt this week and a few other sources. A few children have asked if they can use the same
subject matter for their actual speeches later on in the term. It is preferred that they choose something
different, although this can be discussed on an individual basis.
In Maths, classes will be developing their understanding of ratios and proportions (fractions, decimals and
percentages). They will be looking at Statistics during strand sessions, as well as incorporating lots of other
number skills where possible. It is important that children are regularly practising their timestables. By
Year 6, they should be able to recall all multiplication and division facts up to at least 12 x 12. There are
tasks on the blog to complete and I will try and update these soon.
In Writing, we will be finishing off our poetry from last week where we experimented with language. I spend
some of my time following authors and educationalists on Social Media to help get inspiration. One person
who inspires me is Pie Corbett and I have many of his books which I use in class. Last week some of the
children used his poem Imagine and we then based our own poems on this. I sent Jacobs example to him and
asked what he thought as I like to use an audience where possible. Pie replied the following day and said, I
love it Karen - we just don't do enough of this sort of accessible and playful writing that helps children get a
toehold on becoming a writer. Where did you find the original - I remember it but couldn't find it!!! Have a
great holiday and thanks for sharing. There are some great ideas in the poem - makes you wonder! A lovely
response and I know Jacob was proud that his work had been critiqued by an author! I do hope to explore
this further this term and get a worldwide audience on our writing.
This week, the children will have a task from their homework book to complete. They will also be expected to
continue with their Hell Pizza Reading Challenge. Pizzas will be coming home this week as some have gained
their first slice. I am aware that some children have had issues showing evidence of their challenge task.
Hopefully we are working through this, but it is all good learning with new technology. Please make sure that
Mathletics tasks are completed too.
Have a great week. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with any queries.
