HOW TO USE ETM
CIRCUIT SCHEMATICS
The circuit schematic provides all the information you need when troubleshooting any part of the
electrical system (with the exception of component specifications). At any point in the schematic
diagram, you can find the ground points, component location, wire color and size, current flow, and
connector configuration. You can use each schematic to quickly determine how a circuit should work.
KIA provides the following resources to assist you in electrical troubleshooting.
Shop Manual, Volume 1 will show certain sensors and actuators, describing specific test procedures.
Shop Manual, Volume 2 has an appendix illustrating the schematic diagrams, component location,
and connector configuration and harness layout.
Electrical Troubleshooting Manual Supplement is the same as Volume 2 except the entire book is
dedicated to electrical wiring diagrams (schematics).
Electrical Troubleshooting Manual is occasionally sent to each dealer shortly after the introduction of a
new model. This loose-leaf manual also provides circuit operation descriptions and photographs of
the component location.
Schematic Diagram
The complete vehicle electrical system is divided into schematic diagrams for individual systems or
circuits. Any component or wiring that does not contribute to the function of the principal system is
excluded, although reference is made. This helps you concentrate on the information essential to
troubleshooting the circuit you are working with by removing distractions.
When looking at a schematic diagram, the current flow always starts at the top of the page and flows
downward to ground at the bottom of the page.

Component Location Index

At the end of each schematic or system circuit is an index of component locations used to help locate
the schematic component on the actual vehicle. This index lists major components, connectors,
grounds, their physical location, and shop manual page number to turn to for an illustration of the
location.

Component Location
Component Locations helps you find the actual physical location of the components listed in the
Component Location Index.
For an example, you want to locate the
connector MD01-2 for the Power door
mirror.
Using the electrical troubleshooting manual,
find the connector MD01-2 in the schematic
page.
For this example, see page 36 for the power
door mirror schematic.
Connector

MD02

is

labeled

as

because the M means it is part of the Main

Harness, and the D means door harness.

On page SD-97, the components location
index, you can see that MD02 is on page
CL-9(CL means components location).

Then turn to page CL-9 and fiend the connector MD02(the illustrations are labeled in the numerical
order, top to bottom).Illustrated on CL-9, and shown on the right, you can clearly see that the
connector is located behind the front passengers kick panel.

Connector Configuration
When trying to pinpoint a specific wire in a multi-pin connector, Connector Configurations shows the
connector and pin location within the connector.
The configuration drawings show the connector views as seen from a component after the harness
connector has been disconnected. When more than one connector is connected to a component, the
connectors are all shown together. Both halves of in-line connectors are shown together.

Connector View and Numbering Order

It is not the shape of the connector housing but the connector pins that distinguish between male or
female connectors.

ETM : Electrical Troubleshooting Manual

When looking into the connector, viewing the pin terminals, they are numbered as shown below:

Female
Upper left to lower right

Male
Upper right to lower left

They are numbered in this order so that when the two-connector halves are connected, the matching
pin numbers make contact.
Note:

This method of numbering order does not apply when determining the pin numbers for the

ECM. Refer to the Control Harness portion in the Connector Configuration section for the proper
numbering order.
Harness Layout
Harness layouts show the routing of the major wiring harnesses including the in-line connectors and
the splices between major harnesses. Knowing where to find the proper location within a harness
makes electrical troubleshooting much easier

Symbols
Special symbols are used throughout the schematic diagrams that indicate various components and
points within that circuit. The symbols and abbreviations used in the manuals are explained below.

Connector Identification
A connector identification abbreviation consists of a wiring harness classification symbol and a
number specific to the connector.
The connector locations can be found in the Harness Layout section.
For example:

E 10 - 1
Number specific to a sub connector.
Number specific to the main connector

Connectors that connect wiring harnesses are represented by the following:

M R - 01
Number specific to a main connector.
Rear wiring harness
Main wiring harness
Splice Identification
A splice identification abbreviation uses the same information and layout as the connector, except that
it will begin with the letter S to indicate the word splice and the number represents the splice
number.
For example:

S M - 01
Number assigned to that splice.
