Directions: Answer the following problems. Box your final answers. Please observe correct and complete format.
Theres no need to re-write the problems on your answer sheets.
ASSESSMENT NO. 01
1. Two structural members B and C are bolted to bracket A. Knowing that both members are in
tension and that P = 10 kN and Q = 15 kN, determine magnitude and direction of the resultant
force exerted on the bracket.

2. A steel tank is to be positioned in an excavation. Knowing that the magnitude of P is 500 lb,
determine (a) the required angle alpha () if the resultant R of the two forces applied at A is to
be vertical, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R.

3. Two forces P and Q are applied to the lid of a storage bin as shown. Knowing that P = 60 N
and Q = 48 N, determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the two forces.

4. A telephone cable is clamped at A to the pole AB. Knowing that the tension in the left-hand
portion of the cable is T1 5 800 lb, determine (a) the required tension T2 in the right-hand
portion if the resultant R of the forces exerted by the cable at A is to be vertical, (b) the
corresponding magnitude of R.

5. Two forces are applied as shown to a hook support. Knowing that the magnitude of P is 35 N,
determine by trigonometry (a) the required angle if the resultant R of the two forces applied
to the support is to be horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R.

6. The hydraulic cylinder BC exerts on member AB a force P directed along line BC. Knowing
that P must have a 600-N component perpendicular to member AB, determine (a) the
magnitude of the force P, (b) its component along line AB.

7. Knowing that = 35, determine the resultant of the three forces shown.

8. Knowing that a = 40, determine the resultant of the three forces shown.

9. As part of the design of a new sailboat, it is desired to determine the drag force which may be
expected at a given speed. To do so, a model of the proposed hull is placed in a test channel
and three cables are used to keep its bow on the centreline of the channel. Dynamometer
readings indicate that for a given speed, the tension is 40 lb in cable AB and 60 lb in cable AE.
Determine the drag force exerted on the hull and the tension in cable AC.

10. Two cables are tied together at C and loaded as shown. Determine the tension (a) in cable AC,
(b) in cable BC.

11. A 200-kg crate is to be supported by the rope-and-pulley arrangement shown. Determine the
magnitude and direction of the force P that must be exerted on the free end of the rope to
maintain equilibrium. (Hint: The tension in the rope is the same on each side of a simple
pulley.
