Anticipatory Set

I understand you will have a field trip to an apple orchard. What is an apple orchard?
What will you do there? How many of you like apples, apple pie?

Objective:

Using The Apple Pie Tree, by Zoe Hall, the student will be able to identify the stages of
an apples tree throughout the seasons and demonstrate an understanding of the text.

Teaching: Input

Provide background information on the author. She loves to bake apple pies and her
recipe in the back of the book. Display the book cover and ask the student to predict
what the book is about. Does the cover show the whole tree? What else do you see in
the tree? How can a tree grow apple pie? Read the story to the class.

Teaching: Modeling

“Let’s Collect Some Apples for Our Pie”. Using the SB I will show the students an apple
tree. Our task is to pick the apples to make our pie. I will demonstrate one question.
Teaching: Check for Understanding

I will ask the class a series of questions. For every correct answer, an apple will be
dropped into the basket.

Closure:

What other ingredients go into making an apple pie? What else can we make from
apples? When you go the orchard next week, remember all the wonderful things an apple
tree can bring us.

Extending Activities:

• Using the book The Apple Pie Tree, the students create a chart identifying the
stages of an apple tree in each season.
• Create an apple web on the SB and list the many ways people use apples.
