Introduction

Infosys had laid its foundation stone in the year 1981 with an organisation
structure consisting of just seven engineers who comprised of N R Narayan
Murthy and six engineers hailing from Pune with a capital of just $250. The
foundation was laid with the primary objective to provide assistance to some of
the most socially and economically depressed sectors of the communities.
Milestone
Data Basics Corporation, in New York was its first client in the year in which it
had laid its foundation stone. In the year 1983 it relocated its corporate
headquarters to Bangalore which was initially located in Pune. Infosys went
global in the year 1987 by opening its first international office in Boston, US. In
the year 1993 Infosys turned public and also acquired ISO 9001/TickIT
certification. It had also Introduced Employee Stock Options (ESOP) program
during this year. Infosys opened a development centre in Fremont in the year
1994 and opened its first European office in UK and global development centres
at Toronto and Mangalore. It was also in this year that Infosys started its eBusiness practices. The Infosys foundation was established in 1996 and in the
year 1998 it started Enterprise Solutions (packaged applications) practice.
By the year 1999 Infosys achieved a turnover of US$ 100 million and became the
first Indian company to be listed NASDAQ and also launched Infosys Business
Consulting Services. During this period Infosys became the 21st company in the
world to achieve a CMM Level 5 certification and also expanded its operations by
opening offices in Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Australia, and two development
centres in US. By the next year it doubled its turnover and Re-launched Banks
2000, the universal banking solution from Infosys, as Finacle. In the year 2001
Infosys was rated as the Best Employer by Business World/Hewitt.
In the year 2002 Infosys launched Progeon, offering business process outsourcing
services. During this period Nandan M. Nilekani takes over as the CEO from N.R.
Narayana Murthy, who is appointed Chairman and Chief Mentor. By the year
2004 Infosys reached a turnover of 1 billion US$ and launched Infosys Consulting
Inc. In the year 2005 Infosys recorded the largest international equity offering of
US$ 1 billion from India and was selected to the Global MAKE Hall of Fame.
