Stay 100 ft away from the water's edge if possible; if it is not
possible to stay 100 ft away staff will clearly mark designated
boundaries for participants to not cross.
A first aid kit will always be brought to the climbing site with
proper along with a working cell phone to contact EMS if
needed.
If reaching elevations above 8,000 feet, take time to acclimatize
to the elevation. If symptoms do not lessen, decend
immediatley.
Wearing a helmet while in the 'crash zone' of a climbing site

All participants will have a personal water bottle. Water coolers
will be at the climbing site if water bottles need to be refilled
Breaks will be taken on long approaches, during long session, or
if any participants appear to nearing exhaustion.
The climbing site will be scouted for wild animals, and they will
be removed safely before participants arrive. If a dangerous
animal cannot be safely removed from the site, the participants
will wait up to 30 minutes for the danger to leave; if it takes
longer than 30 minutes, the program will be cancelled and
rescheduled.
Keeping logs of use for each piece of equipment and safety
checks before and after each outing.
Wearing weather appropriate clothing. If there is snow at the
climbing site or if snow is in the forecast, the program will be
cancelled and rescheduled.
The climbing site will be scouted for poisonous plants, and they
will be removed safely before participants arrive.
Wearing the proper footwear, hiking shoes or boots would be
best with sufficient tread

Breaks will be taken on long approaches and during long


sessions. Water intake will be monitored and participants will be
encouraged to drink water before and after the approach, each
climb they do, and during the commute back to the National
Ability Center. If shade is available, participants will be
ecouraged to stay in the shade if they are waiting for a climb.
Wearing weather appropriate clothing. If there is snow at the
climbing site or if snow is in the forecast, the program will be
cancelled and rescheduled.
The climbing site will be scouted for potentially dangerous
insects, and they will be safely removed. If a participant is bitten
by an insect, proper first aid will be administered.
Breaks will be taken during the climbing session. If a participant
cannot complete the climb, they will be lowered off the climb
and allowed rest.
Practicing proper belay techniques while participants are
climbing. When setting up routes, only individuals who have the
proper skills will lead the routes and create proper climbing
anchors for the program.
Sunscreen will be applied before the session starts and
reapplied every hour.
Being aware of each individual's physical condition before and
after each program to manage any concerns that may arise.
Exhaustion, dehydration, and other conditions are touched on in
more detail in this document.
Planning ahead and knowing the weather forecast before each
outing. Watching the weather and signs of changing while on
the course and doing any necessary action if weather conditions
become a potential or obvious hazard. If there is snow at the
climbing site or if snow is in the forecast, the program will be
cancelled and rescheduled.
