Hse Control Measure

Control measures are actions that can decrease exposure to hazards or eliminate hazards altogether. There are generally six levels of control measures: eliminate the hazard, substitute for a lesser risk, isolate the hazard, use engineering controls, use administrative controls, and use personal protective equipment. The purpose of identifying control measures is to help operators understand how risks to health and safety from potential major incidents are managed. Hazard should be eliminated if possible, and if not, controlled to reduce risk to workers' safety. Examples of control measures for specific chemical hazards like hydrofluoric acid, hydrogen sulfide, and drilling fluid include engineering controls like safety equipment, administrative controls like training and rules, and personal protective equipment like gloves and masks.

  • Control Measure for Chemical Hazard: Discusses actions to mitigate the potential for exposure to hazardous chemicals and details the hierarchy of control measures.

Control Measure for Chemical Hazard

Control measures are actions that can be applied to decrease the potential of exposure
to the hazard, or the control measure could be to get rid the hazard or to reduce the possible
of the risk of the exposure to that hazard being realised. A simple control measure would be
the secure guarding of moving parts of machinery eliminating the potential for contact. When
we look at control measures we often refer to the hierarchy of control measures.

Generally there are 6 control measures of hazard:

Eliminate the hazard

Substitute the hazard with the lesser risk
Isolate the hazard
Use engineering controls
Use administrative controls
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) (Used only when other levels of control are
not possible or if additional protection is required to ensure the health and safety of
workers.)

One purpose of control measure identification and assessment is to help the operator
understand how the risks to health and safety associated with potential major incidents are
managed. Hazard should be eliminated whenever it is possible. If not possible, it should be
controlled. Control means reducing the hazard to a stage that doesnt risk the safety of any
worker.
