5 Classmark Update Procedure

5.1 Classmark Overview

Classmark specifies the service capability, supported frequency bands, power capability, and
encryption capability of an MS in the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM). The
classmark of an MS can be classified into classmark 1, classmark 2, and classmark 3. The
network can identify the capabilities of an MS by querying its classmark. The network can also
request an MS to report its classmark 3 by setting the Early Classmark Sending Control (ECSC)
parameter once the connection between an MS and the network is established.
Because the main information in classmark 3 applies to dual-band networks, the GSM
equipment should support the processing of MS classmarks.
Huawei's GSM equipment can process the ECSC and classmark 3 of an MS.
For details about the classmark update procedure, refer to GSM Rec. 04.18.

Classmark Update(6)

If the ECSC is allowed in System Information Type 3, an MS (dual-band MS or vehicle

mounted MS) can initiate a classmark update procedure by sending a Classmark Change
message on the dedicated channel allocated by the network. The Classmark Change message
contains the updated classmark 2 information element of the MS. It may also contain a
classmark 3 information element.

5 Classmark Update Procedure

Step 1 Upon receipt of the Classmark Change message from the MS, the BSS sends a Classmark
Update message. This message contains classmark 2 information element and classmark 3
information element of the MS. The Classmark Update is a bi-directional message.
Step 2 When a Mobility Management (MM) connection is established between the MS and the MSC,
the MSC can initiate a classmark update procedure by sending a Classmark Request message
on the Signaling Connection Control Part (SCCP) to the BSS.
Step 3 Upon receipt of the Classmark Request from the MSC, the BSS either takes no action or takes
the following actions:
z

Sends a Classmark Update message to the MSC

Sends a Classmark Enquiry message to the MS

Step 4 Upon receipt of the Classmark Enquiry message from the BSS, the MS returns a Classmark
Change message to the BSS. The Classmark Change message contains the updated classmark 2
message of the MS. It may also contain the classmark 3 message.
Step 5 Refer to Step 1.

Procedure Explanation

The upper section defines whether the ECSC is supported in System Information Type 3.
The middle section shows the classmark update procedure initiated by the MS when the
ECSC is enabled. :
