Riverside Police Release Results of Combined Railroad Enforcement Program

Riverside Police issue three citations including one court citation and two warnings

On Wednesday, August 19, 2015, Riverside Police participated in the Officer on the Train Program with
18 other suburban and state law enforcement agencies.
Riverside Police issued one citation for a pedestrian crossing the railroad tracks, and two warnings to
juveniles in separate incidents who crossed the tracks while the gates were down with its lights flashing
and bells sounding. The juveniles were issued warnings as they were too young under current state
statute to issue citations to.
Overall, the detail encompassed 93 police officers from 18 different police agencies. Five police officers
rode on the trains as observers including Riverside Police Officer John Cairo while other officers were
detailed to the grade crossings so that when officers on the train broadcasted the violations those officers
could follow up with warnings or citations.
The detail totals included 59 enforcement contacts, 16 citations, 44 warnings, 3,686 educational contacts
and over 42 volunteers worked the program.
Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated, It was alarming that my officers observed two very young
juveniles cross the tracks at the Longcommon crossing while the gates were down, lights flashing, and
bells sounding. As you can imagine, commuter trains were swiftly moving towards the Village at close to
60 miles an hour. In each case with the juveniles, the officer stopped them, warned them, and then
followed up with notification to their parents. In general, both motorists and pedestrians are not exercising
the respect that they need to have for the complications that take place at grade crossings. These types of
violations, unfortunately, are probably taking place daily. I would especially urge parents to talk to their
children to not cross railroad grade or pedestrian crossings when the gates are down at any time.
