Riverside Police Charge Man with DUI and Seldom Used Speeding Statue
Pompano Beach, Florida man charged with aggravated speeding
On Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 3:15 a.m., Riverside Police clocked a vehicle traveling southbound in the 3600 block
of Harlem at a high rate of speed. The officer could hear a vehicle clearly winding up and accelerating from five
blocks south of where the officer was on patrol. When the vehicle passed the officer's squad car, he clocked him on
radar at 84 miles an hour in a 30 miles an hour zone. The officer stopped the vehicle at Harlem and Ogden.
When the officer made contact with the driver, he refused to answer any questions or provide any information
except for that he was coming from "another suburb". When asked by the officer if he knew how fast he was going,
he said he was driving the posted speed limit. The officer could detect a strong order of an alcoholic beverage
coming from the mouth of the defendant and he had multiple signs of impairment. The driver was asked to
participate in a field sobriety test which he did and failed all steps of the testing. The subject was arrested and
taken into custody.
William J. Salinas, 41, of the 1600 block of N E 34th Street in Pompano Beach, Florida was arrested and
charged with DUI, reckless driving, and speeding and aggravated speeding, 84 in a 30 mph zone. At the
time of his arrest, Mr. Salinas was driving a 2003 Mercedes Benz. The subject was processed, booked and
released on bond.
Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated, "Mr. Salinas was absolutely driving out of control when stopped by a
Riverside police officer. Traveling 54 miles over the posted speed limit and at the same time being intoxicated is a
formula for disaster. This individual could have caused a serious accident or death and injured others in addition to
himself.
Additionally, Riverside Police used a little known law which allows police to charge offenders with aggravated
speeding when the posted speed limit is over 26 miles per hour and the penalty increases when the speed limit is
over 35 miles per hour from the posted speed limit. Mr. Salinas was charged with one count of aggravated
speeding which is a Class A misdemeanor and booked into custody on this charge separately.
