Warm-up for 8/20/15

1. Identify at least 3 kinds of measurements we might make in the

lab and list at least 1 tool that would allow you to do this.
Length - ruler or tape
measure

Volume - beaker, test tube,

flask

Temperature - thermometer

Mass - Scale

2. When might you need to use a thermometer in the lab?

2. To ensure the experimental and control groups are at the same
temperature and to record reaction temperatures.
3. What are they doing wrong?

LESSON
Objectives: Students will
A. Identify at least 15 tools used in the laboratory
B. Summarize the function/use of each tool used in the
laboratory

Identifying Laboratory Equipment Introduction

Scientists use a variety of tools to explore the world around them.

Tools are very important in the advancement of science. The types
of tools scientists use depend on the problems they are trying to
solve. A scientist may use something as simple as a metric ruler to
measure the length of a leaf. At another time, the same scientist may
use a complex computer to analyze large amounts of data
concerning hundreds of leaves. In this investigation, you will
identify pieces of laboratory equipment likely to be found in a
biology laboratory. You will also learn the function of each piece of
laboratory equipment.
