REFLECTION from Byrnsie

The Gospel this week contains the sentence, I tell you most solemnly, everybody
who believes has eternal life. St. Paul says, if Christ is not risen from the dead our
faith is in vain. The central belief of our religion is that Jesus has risen from the
dead he has overcome death.

Holy Name of Jesus School

Yet the overwhelming fear in humanity is the fear of death. Here is our challenge.
Our Christian faith, when at its strongest, overcomes the fear of death death has
lost its sting. Surely humanity is crying out for such a faith and our responsibility is to
present that faith to the world.
Catholic funeral ministry is one occasion where we can share our beliefs with the
wider community.
This week the Parish has conducted two funerals and there are another three
scheduled for next week. Many of the people attending these services are not
church attenders and have very little knowledge of our faith. They provide a rich
opportunity for evangelization.
The prayers we use in the Order of Christian Funerals are full of the forgiveness of
God and the promises of eternal life. As a couple of examples, within the Rite, the
initial Invitation to Prayer says:My brothers and sisters,
We have come together to renew our trust in Christ
who, by dying on the cross, has freed us from eternal death
and, by rising, has opened for us the gates of heaven.
At the Final Commendation one of the alternatives reads:
Our brother/sister has fallen asleep in Christ. Confident in the hope of eternal life,
let us commend him/her to the loving mercy of our Father and let our prayers go
with him/her.
At the very end of the service, the Alternate Form of Dismissal reads;
In the sure hope of the resurrection
we take leave of our brother/sister:
let us go in peace.
Although death brings with it much pain through loss and separation from those we
love, it can also provide the Church with the opportunity to promote our faith and,
because of the great hope it holds, bring comfort to those suffering from grief.
Our own death will be a step into the unknown but how fortunate are we that our
faith will comfort us as that day approaches and lead us into eternal life.

Ignatian Examen
Lord, I know that you love me
and that you are with me right now.
Lord, help me to be aware of
your presence in the people Ive
encountered and the
experiences Ive had this day.
Lord, forgive me for those moments
when I have fallen short,
times when I have not been
the kind of person you want me to be.
Lord, give me a heart that is
more like your own,
so that I may be grateful
for the many blessings
of this day and in my life.
Lord, grace me with the strength
to embrace what awaits in hopefulness,
hands outstretched
to whatever lies ahead.
Amen

To taste and see the goodness of the Lord

means to be drawn closer to God. Try, then, to
imitate God as children of His that He loves, and
follow Christ by loving and He loved you. Be a
presence of Gods love in the world today. Do
what you can to bring to life Gods love.
