Exam 3 Review

To clear the air:

The next exam is on Monday, November, 24th .
You may use an 8 12 11 note sheet on the test. I dont care how many sides you use and
you may write whatever you want on it.
The exam will cover sections 4.3-4.9, 5.1.
You can and should use a graphing calculator on this exam (but I need to see work shown).
Now for some review stuff.
If I were taking the 3rd test in Mr. McDonalds Math 8 class, I would be sure that I was able to:
1. Determine if vectors are linearly independent.
2. Know what a basis is... Be able to determine if a set of vectors is a basis of a given vector
space. Be able to take a set of vectors and add as many vectors as you need to complete it
to a basis. (I believe that there was a homework question on this, and yes, guess and check is
an appropriate method).
3. Find the coordinates of a vector relative to a certain basis.
4. Find the dimension of a vector space and/or subspace.
5. Understand/use the theorems involving dimension, 4.5.3-4.5.6.
6. Know the two out of 3 rule: A set, B, of vectors forms a basis of Rn if two of the following
hold:
(a) B contains n vectors.
(b) The span of B is Rn .
(c) B is linearly independent.
(you should understand why it is true as well)
7. Transition from one basis of a vector space to another. (Those transition matrix formulas
are good ones to put on a note card).
8. Given a matrix A, find a basis for the row space, column space, and null space.
9. Use a matrix to determine a basis for a set of vectors. Once you have it, what is the dimension
of the span of a set of vectors? (the size of the basis).
10. Find the rank and nullity of a matrix, A.
11. If TA is a linear transformation, find a basis for the kernel of TA (this is the same as the null
space of A).
12. Understand what eigenvalues and eigenvectors are, and how they work. (Ax = x)

13. Find the characteristic polynomial and characteristic equation of a matrix:

det(I A) = 0
|
{z
}
polynomial
{z
}
|
equation

14. Find the eigenvalues of a matrix, and find a basis for the eigenspace corresponding to each
eigenvalue.
15. Use eigenvalues and eigenvectors to evaluate expressions involving powers of a matrix. That
is, if is an eigenvalue of A and x is the corresponding eigenvector, what is An x?
16. Answer True/False questions. There are some at the end of every section for practice. Odd
ones have answers in the back and email me if you have a question about an even question.
That should about do it... Most importantly, relax. ,
