Day Five Lesson Plan

Learning Target

When given the IPad application First Calculator and the device a Coin-U-Lator, as well
as a completed graphic organizer, students will be able to solve a multi-step story
problem.

Advanced Preparation & Materials Needed:

Same story problems and materials from Lessons 1 and 2

IPads for each student, each installed with First Calculator application

Coin-U-Lator device

Completed graphic organizers for each problem

Sequenced instruction:

Begin by going over any misconceptions from previous days lesson.

Introduce the lesson using our resources, solve multi-step story problems.
Before we jump right in to solve the problems, we will learn to use two different
technological resources. The first one is the application First Calculator on the IPad.

Show them how to turn on the IPad, and load the First Calculator application.
The application looks like a normal calculator. However, when you press a number,
(press it), you can see that it says it out loud.

We can also see (press in a few numbers and an operation) that it shows everything weve
pushed so we dont forget anything.

This is a great tool to help us solve problems, because we can hear when we press
something wrong or something we didnt mean to click. So make sure that we are paying
attention as we use the application.

Now lets look at the Coin-U-Lator. This is a special calculator that is designed to be used
with money.

Show them the buttons, and how each one looks like a different coin, as well as a dollar
bill.

Show how by pressing the coin, it will add that amount to your total. Also, by pressing
the minus button, it will subtract the coin or dollar bill chosen.

You cant use this device for regular computations, but this is very beneficial and helpful
for solving problems that involve money.

Using the First Calculator application, follow the steps outlined in the completed
Graphic Organizer from Lesson Four, and solve the first story problem.

First 11x2=22. Next 14+10=24. Then 11+22=33. Finally 33+24=59. Final

answer is 59.

Do the same with the second teach story problem.

Then, have the student solve the Guided Practice problems out loud, using their
calculators. Call on students when they come up with an answer for each question.

Once both Guided Practice problems are correctly solved, hand back their individual
problems and have them solve the problems on their own.

Walk around and provide additional support as needed.

Assessment:

Collect their work at the end of the time and check for understanding.
