If I could travel back in time to meet a famous person from history, I would lik
e to meet Late Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I am a great admirer and fan of him bec
ause of the immense tolerance that he possessed against all odds of life.
Vallabhbhai Patel (31 October 1875 â 15 December 1950) was a political and social
leader of India who played a major role in the country's struggle for independen
ce and guided its integration into a united, independent nation. In India and ac
ross the world, he was often addressed as â Sardarâ which means Chief in many languag
es of India.
A popular anecdote of his school days recounts how he lanced his own painful boi
l in the armpit without hesitation, even as the barber (quack in the village) su
pposed to do it trembled. This shows how tolerant he was against any odds.
Furthermore, in 1909, Patel's wife Jhaverba was hospitalised in Mumbai erstwhile
Bombay, to undergo a major surgical operation for cancer. Her health suddenly w
orsened and despite successful emergency surgery, she died in the hospital. Pate
l was given a note informing him of his wife's demise. As he was cross-examining
a witness in court, he read the note and pocketed it and continued to intensely
cross-examine the witness and finally won the case. He broke down to the news t
o others only after the proceedings had ended. Patel himself decided not to rema
rry. He raised his children with the help of his family and sent them to English
-medium schools in Mumbai.
Summarizing, the above incidences are indicative of the immense bravery and toug
hness of Mr. Patel against the odds of life. Mr. Patel is well-known as an â Iron-m
anâ . Hence is my desire to meet this famous person from history.
