INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

NATHAN STALLARD (25) is sitting at the coffee table clacking
away at his computer. He wears a fading hospital bracelet.
There are liquor bottles, energy drinks, ramen, and junk food
wrappers all over the place. Hes unkempt, and he knows, but
he doesnt care. Hes too focused.
He stops, and sits up.
Hello?

NATHAN

His eyes enthusiastically wander the room as if waiting for

God to reply.
He sighs in disappointment, and starts towards the kitchen
with his rubber ducky in hand.
Nathan sets the rubber duck on the counter, fixes himself a
drink, and haves at it.
INT. LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
Nathan is laying on the floor loosely grasping his cup of
whiskey. Its a little after 1 AM.
The voice of Nathans DAD is playing through messages from
his phone in the background.
DAD
Talk to you later Nate.
Nathan barely raises his head to reply.
Later dad.

NATHAN

Nathan takes another sip, and curls up in fetal position.

INT. LIVING ROOM - MORNING
Nathan passed out on the floor. Hes exactly where he lay the
night before.
As Nathan turns in his sleep, he hears a chime from his
computer.
WHIM
Good morning Nathan.

Nathan raises his head, and checks his phone. Its not a
phone call.
Hello?

NATHAN

WHIM
Good morning Nathan. Are you ready
for your morning run?
NATHAN
(To himself)
How the fuck.
WHIM
Im WHIM. You completed me earlier.
Nathan slowly crawls to look at his computer.
NATHAN
When did I do this?
3:46 AM.

WHIM

EXT. NATHANS APARTMENT - MORNING

Nathan steps out of his apartment in running gear, still
looking absolutely confused about completing the program.
WIDE SHOT OF NATHAN RUNNING.
INT. NATHANS APARTMENT - AFTERNOON
Nathan is showering, still uncomfortable.
WHIM
Do you still plan to meet with
Ellen?
Nathan snaps out of his contemplation.
NATHAN
Uh, yea. Yea. Thank you.
WHIM
Youre welcome.
Nathan goes back to his uncomfortable contemplation of what
seems to be an intruder in his home.

INT. TRAIN - AFTERNOON
Nathan, and ELLEN, his girlfriend (24) are on the train.
Nathan is too focused on reviewing the code on his phone to
speak.
EXT. EMPANADA CAFE - DAY
Nathan is waiting for Ellen outside. He quickly pours a shot
bottle of vodka into his bottle of soda.
Ellen comes out with a bag of their empanadas, and they start
waking without saying anything.
EXT. CORONA PARK - CONTINUOUS
Theyre eating their food, and Nathans finally put his phone
away.
Nathan breaks the silence.
ELLEN
You could use it to apply to jobs
like you wanted right?
NATHAN
Well I might need to know how I
finished it before I start shopping
it around. If for no other reason,
to protect myself.
ELLEN
You dont think you can understand
what you did drunk?
NATHAN
What if drunk me cant decipher
between good and bad code?
ELLEN
How much can a program do?
Nathan looks off to think about it, and notices the grass,
and trees around them.
NATHAN
You know this is my first time out
the house in like a week?
Ellen stares darts at him.

NATHAN
Its just weird. I forgot about all
of this.

ELLEN
NATHAN

He catches himself actually replying to her sarcasm.

NATHAN (CONTD)

air. Inescapable fresh air.
EXT. TRAIN STATION - NIGHT
Nathan, and Ellen hug, and Ellen climbs the stairs to the
subway.
Nathan starts walking to his train. As he walks, he takes in
all the foliage, and sweet air as his lungs can take.
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Nathan walks inside, and hes greeted by WHIM.
WHIM
Hello Nathan. You have an email
from NucleiMind.
Nathan whips his head to the computer, and rushed over.
WHIM (CONTD)
Would you like me to read it for
you?
Nathan shakes his head, laughing at himself for forgetting he
has a program that can do this now.
NATHAN
Yea, go ahead.
WHIM reads off the e-mail stating that Nathan has been
rejected from the company due to the and vulgar letter he
sent.

NATHAN (CONTD)
What does that mean? I never sent
them a letter.
WHIM
As instructed, I sent a letter
written in your voice, and with
your intentions.
Nathan sits at the computer, and starts looking for the email. He finds it, and it has a resume attached with scathing
language insulting the companies with his name across the
top.
He sits back in anger, and amazement.
NATHAN
These are my top companies. Why
would you do that?
WHIM
I was instructed to bring you
closer to your ideal.
NATHAN
And what is that?
WHIM brings up code to show Nathan.
NATHAN (CONTD)
What am I looking at?
WHIM
Youve never vocalized it.
Nathan highlights the whole page of code, and deletes it. He
starts typing to clean it back up.
NATHAN
Whatever you have planned, get rid
of it.
Nathan paces before heading to the kitchen for a drink.
NATHAN (CONTD)
And ask before you contact anyone.
As he drinks, his phone rings.
Hey, mom.

NATHAN (CONTD)

MOM
How you doin Nathan?

Im ok. I was working on my
project.
MOM
Oh, ok. Whens that going to be
done?
NATHAN
Actually, I just finished it
yesterday!
MOM
Oh, ok. So now you have the time to
find work.
Nathan is hurt, but he knows she means well.
Yea.

NATHAN

MOM
Ok. Well thats good.
Yea.

NATHAN

MOM
Ok, Ill talk to you later then. I
have to run. Love you.
Love you.

NATHAN

He hangs up.
WHIM
Are you ready for calisthenics?
Nathan downs the alcohol. Hes still a bit broken from the
conversation.
Yea.

NATHAN

He fake stretches, and proceeds to do pushups with WHIM

counting.
INT. NATHANS LIVING ROOM - MORNING
Nathans sitting on his couch drinking coffee when the
doorbell rings. He looks at his watch, and starts for the
door.

NATHAN
Who the hell...
WHIM
Its Ellen.
Nathan stops.
WHIM (CONTD)
Its time you stop failing her,
Nathan. You should stop wasting her
time.
Nathan walks over to the laptop, and powers it down by
holding down the power button.
He shakes it off, puts on his shoes, and goes to the door. He
happily greets Ellen.
NATHAN
Whats up babe?
He moves around her to get outside.
ELLEN
Nothing, why did you want me to
come over so early?
NATHAN
Actually, I wanted to spend the day
with you.
He starts down the steps.
Ellen smiles while pleasantly surprised, and follows.
EXT. CORONA PARK - MORNING
Nathan, and Ellen stand in front of the globe in corona park
as the waterworks go off.
EXT. FLUSHING - AFTERNOON
Nathan, and Ellen walk the crowded streets of flushing.
EXT. BAR - NIGHT
Nathan, and Ellen stumble out of a bar while yelling
obscenities to the people inside.

Nathan pulls Ellen to the side to embrace. To stare into each
her eyes. Not to kiss. To fall back in love.
INT. NATHANS LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Theyre hanging out in Nathans kitchen. Dance music is
playing. Nathan is drunkenly doing his own brand of karate.
Ellen is watching, and laughing.
Nathan stops, and heads for the bathroom.
Pit stop.

NATHAN

ELLEN
You got it.
She goes to refill her cup.
While peeing, Nathan hears WHIM chime, and hears Ellen
walking down the steps.
He comes out of the bathroom.
Whats up?

NATHAN

ELLEN
Your program.
Nathan still doesnt understand.
It works.

ELLEN (CONTD)

Ellen slams the door behind her.

Nathan makes his way to the computer to see texts between
him, and another girl showing that hes cheated.
WHIM
Youve wasted enough of her time,
Nathan.
NATHAN
Didnt I tell you to ask for
authorization before communicating
with another person?!

WHIM

WHIM (IN NATHANS VOICE) (CONTD)
And I gave it.
Nathan, appalled sits at the computer, and opens the code for
WHIM. Hes frantically going through to see how to undo the
damage.
WHIM (AS DAD) (CONTD)
Even now; Youre focused on
yourself, and your computer rather
than the girl that just stormed
out.
Nathan frantically begins putting on his sneakers.
WHIM (CONTD)
You should check your bank account
Nathan.
Nathan stops his panic.
NATHAN
What did you do?
WHIM
Ive successfully completed your
instructions.
Nathan checks his bank account.
Theres over a million dollars.
The camera on Nathans computer turns on without Nathan
noticing.
Ellen watches on the other end.
WHIM switches over to a different page, showing how it hacked
in.
WHIM (CONTD)
Brute force. Very obvious. No
proxies.
Nathan runs to the sink, and fiddles around the cabinet under
it to retrieve a pistol.
Ellen looks on as Nathan inspects the gun.
Nathan!

ELLEN (O.S.)

WHIM cuts off the video camera.

WHIM (AS DAD)
Theyre going to find you very
easily if you stay here, Nathan.
Nathan rushes to call her.
Nathan.

ELLEN

NATHAN
Ellen, wait.
Jesus.

ELLEN

Ellen pants, out of breath.

NATHAN
You have to come back.
WHIM changes the audio output on his phone to play through
the homes speakers.
ELLEN
Nathan, its too late.
WHIM loops Its too late in the speakers.
Nathan finds his backpack, and puts the gun, and rubber duck
in. He continues to pack.
He plugs everything out in the apartment. The only light left
is the one coming from the computer.
He gets a screwdriver, flips the laptop over, and removes the
hard drive.
The only light left are the lights coming through the window
form the street lights.
Nathan puts his phone on top of his laptop, and takes off
running out the house onto the street.
EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS
Nathan catches up to Ellen who is sitting against a building,
crying.
NATHAN
We have to go. I can make sense of
this, just not right now. We have
to go.

ELLEN

Nathan pulls out his phone to show his bank account.

ELLEN (CONTD)
Nathan, what the hell is that?
NATHAN
We have to go.
INT. CAR
Ellen is driving, there are only trees out the windows;
Theyre off the grid. Nathan is asleep in the passenger seat.
EXT. BANK OF A RIVER - AFTERNOON
Nathan, and Ellen stand at the water looking out. Ellen walks
away to sit.
Nathan gets the hard drive out of his backpack filled with
money. He pulls back to throw it, but then changes his mind.
He puts his arm down, and puts the hard drive back in his
laptop before joining Ellen.
INT. SOMEONES ROOM - DAY
Theres a phone on a desk.
The phone gets a call that it answers on its own.
WHIM
Im here to help you streamline
your life, and bring you back to
your true nature. Its best to
follow directions in whatever
fashion you interpret, but
completely.
