Course Description
Communication and Literacy is a half year, skill-based course designed to develop competencies
necessary during the students time in high school and beyond. The course strives to increase student
aptitude in traditional literacy skills, reinforcing what is taught in the traditional ninth grade English
curriculum using high interest materials. Students will also become active and critical consumers of
media, understanding that in todays world, media is one of the primary devices through which we
construct values and meaning.

Units of Study
Unit 1: Untraditional Traditional Literature: Folklore and the Graphic Novel
Genres May Include: The narrative, childrens lit, humor, poetry/music, graphic novels, myths

Unit 2: Media Studies


Topics Include: Analysis of text and subtext of different mediums, including television, motion
picture, and advertising; the importance of demographics; the techniques used to
persuade an
audience; the implications and effects of living in a media-based culture will be
examined.
