History of Valentine's Day

February is here, and we all know that means Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and
many are preparing for it, in their own ways. Some will spend it with their partners and some with their
friends. Even though Valentine's Day makes such a commotion to society; What is Valentine's Day?
What are it's origins? Well, Valentine's Day came from a man called St. Valentine. He was a Roman
Priest at a time when there was an emperor called Claudias II who persecuted the church at that
particular time. This emperor prohibited young couples to marry because of the hypothesis that
unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers, because married soldiers might be afraid of
what might happen to them, or their wives or families if they died. Although the orders of the emperor
were absolute Valentine secretly married them anyway knowing the consequences, because he believed
in true love. Emperor Claudius II caught, imprisoned and tortured him for performing marriage
ceremonies against his edict. One of the men who was to judge him, in line with the Roman law at the
time, called Asterius had a blind daughter. He asked Valentine to pray for her and heal her, which he did
with great success, causing Asterius to become christian himself. Valentine was later sentenced to death
at February 14th. The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius' daughter signing
it, from your Valentine.
