Reflection 9/9/15
Complimentary Co-Teaching and Team Teaching
What are they?
Complimentary Co-Teaching is where you have one teacher who
lectures or teaches the lesson and the second teacher paraphrases
what the first teacher is saying. In other words, the second teacher will
simplify what the first teacher is saying, or write notes on the board
etc.. The second teacher helps the first teacher teach the lesson.
Team Teaching is where both teachers teach at once. The
teachers run the class together. However, the teachers need to be able
to work together. The teachers cannot clash with each other and one
teacher cannot hog the entire lesson. The teachers need to carefully
plan who will be teaching which part of the lesson/ who will be
teaching what.
Similarities and Differences?
In both teaching methods, there are two teachers in the
classroom to help run the lesson. Both teachers need to work together
in order to teach the students. Also, the teachers are going to have to
divvy up the work so that each teacher can teach/ help with some part
of the lesson.
In terms of differences, Team Teaching has the two teachers
carrying a sort of equal weight. Both teachers have to work together

and plan their lesson so that they can both run the lesson. In
Complimentary Co-Teaching, there really is only one teacher who is
really teaching the lesson and the other teacher helps get the first
teachers point across.
How they pertain to ELL?
Both of these teaching methods would benefit an ELL student.
There are two teachers in the classroom that can focus on the ELL
students and ensure that they are keeping up with the lesson and
understand the material. The students will also get two different ways
of explanation on the same material, which could significantly aid them
in their learning.
