Competition conditions
1. COMPETITION ORGANISATION & ENQUIRIES
The Competition is being managed and administered by Barton Willmore
International (BWi) on behalf of the Client. All queries relating to the
competition should be directed in the first instance to:

The Competition Organisers, any member of BWi, nor any other member of
the Judging Panel should be solicited for information, as this may lead
to disqualification from the competition.
2. COMPETITION FORMAT
The competition is a single stage, ideas only competition that will not
directly translate into a proposal for construction or culminate in a
town planning application at this stage.
3. ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open to anyone including designers, architects,
landscape architects, artists, engineers, and students. Crossdisciplinary teams are welcomed to collectively respond to the brief.
Competition entries must be submitted in English.
The following parties are excluded from participating in the Competition
and may not compete or assist a Competitor in any way:

Members of the Judging Panel, anyone employed by the Competition


Organizer, or any Consultant supporting the selection process as
specified in the Brief;
Anyone who is closely related or has any kind of dependence, or
close professional relationship to a member of the Judging Panel,
Consultants specified in the Brief or the Competition Organisers.

4. JUDGING PANEL
The Judging Panel [which may be subject to change] is expected to
comprise of highly acclaimed international members of the fields set below
but not limited to:

** A BWi Consultant(s) will attend the assessments to document the


selection process and provide procedural support.
In the event of a Judging Panel member being unable to continue to act
through illness or any other cause, the Competition Organiser, reserves
the right to appoint an alternative Panel member.
The role of the Judging Panel will be to make a recommendation for
consideration and ratification by the Client, with whom the final decision
on the appointment of the winning teams will rest.

6. CLARIFICATION QUESTIONS
Questions relating to the competition should be submitted directly to the
Competition Organisers via email. The deadline for questions for this
aspect of the competition is 15 August 2015. The Competition Organisers
will endeavour to respond to all questions submitted which will be
publicised via the website.

7. SELECTION CRITERIA
The submissions will be assessed against the following criteria:

Beauty and their definition of beauty and the home

Architecture that represents ideals and aspirations

Originality of solutions, innovation and inspiring unique ways of


living without relying on technological solutions or gimmicks
Environmental considerations and response to site
Relationship of built and natural
Practicality
Response and relevance to the brief
Teams will be ultimately judged on their understanding, definition
and (formal) expression of the brief.

8. ANONYMITY - UNIQUE USERNAME


All submissions will be judged anonymously, via use of their unique
username that is provided at the time of Registration. The username
should be prominently displayed on each element of the design submission
- see Submission requirements.
Any submission that has identifying marks [including logos, text,
insignia, or images that could be used to identify the submissions
authors] will be automatically disqualified.
9. DECLARATION OF AUTHORSHIP
The submission must be accompanied by the Declaration of Authorship
form which should be duly completed with the Username entered in the
box provided. Each Competitor must be able to satisfy the Competition
organisers that the submitted design is an original piece of work
[prepared for the express purposes of the Competition], and that he/she
is the bona fide author of the design proposals he/she has submitted.
Submission of the Declaration of Authorship form acknowledges authorship
of the design ideas, and by signing it, Competitors accept all conditions
pertaining to the competition and agree to abide by the decision of the
Judging Panel. The practice/ team name stated on the Declaration Form
will be used in all press releases so please ensure the accuracy of the
information provided.
10. DISQUALIFICATION
Submissions shall be excluded from the Competition:

If a Competitor shall disclose his or her identity, or improperly


attempt to influence the decision;
If received after the latest time stated under the Submission
Method;

11. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS


Each of the anonymous digital submission elements should bear the
username only.
11.1 DESIGN SHEETS
Applicants are required to prepare a design for the competition site.
Submissions should take the form of a pdf. The design boards should
however be presented such that it can be readily viewed on-screen and
also be legible when printed at A3 size.
The competition is not seeking fully developed designs, but ideas,
concepts and design responses to the brief. Each board should be
illustrated in a clear and succinct manner to enable Panel members to
readily understand the design drivers behind the proposals and approach
towards the selected site. This should include a plan, section and
elevation, together with annotated diagrams, concept sketches and other
visualisations deemed necessary to convey the atmosphere of the proposed
design.
Each digital board should be presented in landscape format, with a
combined PDF file of no more than 10Mb in total. The file name should
consist of the username and item description, for example:

username_design_boards.pdf

Each sheet should clearly display the username.


11.2 PUBLICITY IMAGES
Two publicity images should be submitted for potential use in the printed
and electronic media for each of the sites selected by applicants. The
image should be representative of the design ideas proposed and be
readily identifiable as such. An on-line gallery resource of publicity
images may subsequently be uploaded. The two images should be submitted
in JPEG format at 300 dpi resolution. The file name should consist of the
username, and item description, for example:

11.3 DECLARATION OF AUTHORSHIP FORM

12. SUBMISSION METHOD


The submission requirements must be submitted via the Design A Beautiful
House Website. All required elements of the submission must be received
by the stated deadline.
Participants should login via their username (and password) where their
Unique Registration Number will appear. A username for this purpose
will also be e-mailed to the contact address provided at the time of
registration. Through the login portal, there will subsequently be a
link that each participant can follow to submit their entry anonymously.
Applicants are strongly advised to familiarise themselves with the
submission site via registration, to allow sufficient time for their
entry and successful upload prior to the submission deadline. The portal
will not accept any material uploaded once the submission deadline has
expired.
13. NOTIFICATION OF RESULT & PUBLICITY
Feedback will only be provided to the winners. Competitors will be
expected to maintain confidentiality and must not release their designs
for publication, or identify the name of the successful or unsuccessful
designers to any third parties until after an official announcement has
been made and/or anonymity lifted.
The Competition Organisers reserve the right to publicise the
Competition, any design submission, and the result in any way or medium
they consider fit. Illustrations of any design - either separately, or
together with other designs, with or without explanatory text - may
be used without cost. Once anonymity has been lifted, authors will be
credited and recognised in all associated media and publicity.
14. AWARDS
Each winning team or individual will receive part of the prize fund which
is designated as 25,000. This will ideally take the form of, 1st, 2nd
and 3rd places alongside commendations, but is subject to change. The
Client undertakes to pay the winning individual/ team or winners within 6
weeks of the conclusion of the competition. Invoices for payment should
be submitted to the client via the Organisers.
15. COPYRIGHT
The ownership of copyright will be in accordance with the Copyright,
Designs and Patents Act 1988 - i.e. Copyright rests with the author of
the submitted design, unless ownership has been granted to the Client via
a licensing agreement. It is a condition of entry that the entrant agrees
to transfer ownership of the copyright to the Client if required, where a
reasonable licence fee will be negotiated.

16. POST COMPETITION


The role of BWi is limited to the administration and management of the
competition process. BWi will have no further role with this competition
once the winners have been selected and competitors notified.
The Client reserves the right not to proceed beyond the competition
stage in the event that the requirements and aspirations set for the
competition are not met, but all Honorarium payments as indicated will be
awarded.
