The Philippine weather bureau developed a project to use Facebook to better warn people of approaching typhoons by sending up-to-the-minute information. They started using Facebook during Typhoon Megi in October 2016 to post storm updates and warnings. Facebook allows widespread distribution of information to its nearly 1 million followers. While free and fast, the project relies on people having internet access to receive warnings. Officials credited social media with helping keep deaths from Megi to 31 by persuading thousands to take safety precautions.
