Active and Healthy Schools Assessment Results

Assessment Results
Overall Grade: F
During School: 40%
Room for improvement. Some simple changes can have a tremendous impact on your Active &
Healthy score, from point-of-decision signage to additional physical activity after lunch.

Curriculum: 40%
Room for improvement. Studies show the importance of an effective PE curriculum to overall
student health and academic performance. A stronger emphasis on PE can go a long way toward
creating an Active & Healthy environment.

Recess / Lunch: 25%

Let's get to work. A few simple changes can encourage students to choose healthy foods over
sugary snacks, which will increase your Active & Healthy score and help students get more out
of school.

After School: 20%

Let's get to work. Take a look at a few simple changes your school can make to help create an
Active & Healthy environment, both at school and at home

Analysis of Results
My schools strengths in areas of healthiness are during school and curriculum. We
offer PE classes and recess daily for students, as well as short breaks during the day. There is
discussion about healthy eating and exercise habits in the curriculum. However, we dont have
any healthy signage that Ive seen or physical activity times for the staff.
Two weaknesses that we have are recess/lunch and after school. I feel that the results
may have been skewed here for recess/lunch because Edu-Prize Gilbert doesnt offer a lunch
program. Instead, every student brings their own lunch. There also arent any vending machines
anywhere on campus. Therefore, the only sugary snacks offered would be what students bring
themselves. As far as the after school category, I have never seen a message about wellness sent
home or any social activities promoting wellness such as walking buddies. There is room for
improvement there.
One way to improve the school policies would be to begin sending home a weekly
newsletter from the PE department about health. This would not increase the burden on
classroom teachers and it would be seen as a normal thing coming from PE teachers.
Alternatively, each teacher could begin including a box in their weekly newsletter on wellness.
From this, I would expect to hear about more familial physical activity. Another thing that could
be done is to post reminders about healthy eating and exercise around the school. I would expect
increased awareness from these and maybe a decrease in students bringing sugary snacks to
school.
I think it would be eye-opening to the people at Edu-Prize to know that their school
currently was graded an F in terms of healthiness. Edu-Prize has a reputation as one of the best
charter schools around. Simply showing them this assessment might spark a desire for change.
An easy thing to do to promote more healthful behaviors would be to have some parent
volunteers design and post signs regarding wellness around the school. There are always parents
looking to volunteer, and this would be a good way to involve them and spread awareness.
Another thing that could be done is for administration to send home messages about the types of
lunches that students should be bringing in order to develop heathy eating habits.
For my signature assignment, I could survey students about days when they have PE
(Monday through Thursday) versus days they dont (Friday) and if they notice a relationship
between their physical activity and their stress level. Theoretically, since my students have PE
most days, they should be less stressed than students at other schools that dont.

Demographic Information about Edu-Prize Gilbert

My schools name is Edu-Prize Junior High- Gilbert Campus. It is part of the Eduprize
Schools Llc School District. The percentage of students on free or reduced lunch is not
applicable because the school does not offer a school lunch program. Instead, every student
brings their own lunch. Its enrollment is 1,417 students. There was no information available
about the proportion of ELLs in the school. Grades K-11 are currently offered. 12th grade will be
available starting next year. The average class size is 22 students. It is considered an urban
school. 76% of students are White, 13% are Hispanic, 5% Asian, 2% of two or more races, 2%
Black, 1% American Indian, and less than 1% Pacific Islander. The school has received an A
letter grade. It is a charter school that is not Title I.
