DRY LEAF FIRE

STARTER
KLUANG HIGH SCHOOL

INTRODUCTION

Dry Leaf Fire Starter is a product intuited to ease the process of

making fire besides reducing production cost and pollution.
What is really unique about this product is that it produces
quite a low amount of soot during combustion. It also can be
handled easily without breaking it apart and it also able to
sustain a flame for a longer period of time than fire starters
available in the market.

MAKING METHODS

D.L Fire Starter is made from dried leaves and paraffin wax.
Paraffin wax is an excellent material for storing heat, with a
specific heat capacity of 2.14-2.9 J g-1K-1 (joules per gram
kelvin) and a heat of fusion of 200-220 J g-1 . The high content of
cellulose acts as binder to keep the product intact, thus making
this product easier to be handled and carried as it does not
break into small pieces easily.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

One of the problems that we have found is that most of the

available fire starters in the market are quite harmful if the
fumes are being inhaled due to the content of substanes like
hexamine.

Most of the ready-to-use fire starter products can only sustain

a flame for a short duration which is around 6 minutes.

The available fire starter products are quite difficult to be

handled as they are prone to break into pieces.

DESIGN CRITERIA

Function
Functions as a fuel to help fire-making especially for outdoor
activities such as camping. Variations in size are specified for
certain uses, e.g. bigger size for cooking etc.

Durability
High content of cellulose maintains the shape of the product.
Able to sustain a flame for 9 minutes.

Material compatibility
-Dry leaves
a. High content of cellulose helps to keep the product intact; reducing
the tendency to break when mishandled.
b. Cellulose is also a type of carbohydrate that is really difficult to be
broken down, thus the fire starter product can be kept for an
extended period of time without breaking apart.
c. Dry leaves are pretty easy to find in most places. Almost all types of
dry leaves can be used to make this product.
