Question 1

a. Write a set of transformation matrices that describe the effect of each symmetry
operation in the point group of the molecule above on a set of coordinates x, y, z for a
point.

c. Obtain as many irreducible representations as possible from the transformation

matrices in (a).
The matrices can be block diagonalized into three 1 X 1 matrices, with the
representations shown in the table:
= A1 + B1 + B2
d. Using the appropriate character table, verify that the irreducible representations are
mutually orthogonal.
Multiply A1 and B1:
(1x1) + (1x -1) + (1x1) + (1x -1) = 0
Or A1 x B2:

(2 m)

(1x1) + (1x -1) + (1x -1) + (1x 1) = 0

If is it 0 = orthogonal.

Question 2
The character table for the C2v point group is shown below:

a. What is the order of the group?

4
b. How many symmetry classes are present in the group?
4 (A1, A2, B1, B2)
c. To what irreducible representations do the following atomic orbitals belong to:
(i) pz = A1
(ii) s = A2
(iii) dxz = B1
(iv) dz2 = A1
d. Determine the direct products of the following representations in C 2v:
(i) B1 x B2 = (1 x1) (-1 x -1) (1 x -1) (-1 x 1) = 1 1 -1 -1 = A2
