Photography Terms
Research what each of these terms mean, and what controls they
are on your camera, if they are. The sheet provided in your Intro
to Photography booklets will help determine this.
Give a brief description, when best each is used, and what/where
it is located on your camera if possible in your answers.
1. Aperture- is a hole or an opening through which light travels.
2. Motion - is a change in position of an object with respect to time.
3. Depth of Field-is the amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects
that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph.
4. Shutter Speed- the state of being exposed to contact with something.
5. Rule of Thirds- is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their
intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear
features in the image to flow from section to section.
6. Exposure- the state of being exposed to contact with something.
7. Composition- the nature of something's ingredients or constituents; the way in
which a whole or mixture is made up.
8. Focal Length- the distance between the center of a lens or curved mirror and its
focus.
9. SLR- is a digital camera combining the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens
reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film.
10. Auto Focus- a device that focuses a camera or other piece of equipment
automatically.
11. Back Lighting- illumination from behind
12. Balance- an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain
upright and steady.
13. Contrast- the state of being strikingly different from something else, typically
something in juxtaposition or close association.
14. F-stop- a camera setting corresponding to a particular f-number.
15. ISO Speed- is the measure of a photographic film's sensitivity to light, determined
by sensitometry and measured on various numerical scales, the most recent being the
ISO system.
