This assignment is to be done in a group of maximum 3 students. The assignment is


to achieve Course Outcome no 1. At the end of the assignment, students should be
able to distinguish and evaluate the different usage of cost data, cost indices and cost
modelling in the preparation of preliminary estimates (C4, P3, A2).

COST DATA (C4, P3, A2)

Using 20 different contract documents (projects), you are to collect 15 construction


material prices, and to analyse the prices based on the contract price and the GFA of
the project. Find the mean price of each material.

COST INDEX (C4, P3, A2)

Based on a contract document of your choice, determine the Building Cost Index for
the project. Then forecast the index for December 2015, if the construction market is
to be increased 10% annually, since December 2013.

COST MODELLING (C4, P3, A2)

Based on the information given in Appendix I, propose a preliminary estimate for a new
building in Appendix II, for each method of cost modelling below. Each proposed
estimate must be forecasted to December 2015.

1. Unit method
2. Cubic method
3. Floor area method
4. Storey enclosure method

Submission
You are to submit your work on or before 18th September 2015, together with the
assessment form. Your submission must clearly show all collected cost data, evidence
of indices, all calculations using the relevant method, sketches and assumptions.

1. Go to CIDB homepage www.cidb.gov.my


2. From the top menu bar, select construction cost
3. From the left menu bar, select National Construction Cost Centre
4. Select from the drop down menu, Building Cost Index
5. Select from the Building Cost Index table, the relevant year of your project.
6. Choose the appropriate index based on the building category and the region of
your project.
