Atoms , Elements and

Compounds
By Jackie & Lucy
Atoms
Atoms are the building
blocks of matter.
Atoms are made up of
particles called
neutrons, protons and
electrons.
Neutrons are particles
that have no charge.
charged Protons are
positively particles.
An electron is a
negatively charged
particle that occupies
space around an
atom’s nucleus.
Elements
An element is a pure
substance that
cannot be broken
down into other
substances by
physical or chemical
means.
Each element has a
unique name and
symbol

Periodic table of
elements
The periodic table is
organized into rows,
called periods,
vertical columns,
called groups.
Each individual block
in the grid
represents an
element.
Compound
A compound is a pure
substance formed
when two or more
different elements
combine.
Each compound has a
chemical formula
made up of the
chemical symbols
from the periodic
table..
Chemical Bonds
Substance The force
that holds the e
together is called a
chemical bond.
The chemical bond that
forms when electrons
are shared is called a
covalent bond.
An ionic bond is an
electrical attraction
between two opposite
charged atoms or
groups of atoms called
ions.
Van der Waals forces
Are attractive forces
between molecules
named for the dutch
physicist Johannes van
der Waals who first
described the
phenomenon.
Van der Waals forces
are not as strong as
covalent and ionic
bonds but they play a
key role in biological
processes
