Note: This identity has found a use in physics, in the derivation of a solution of the
sine-Gordon equation in the theory of non-linear waves.
(b) ln sec y tan y ln sec y tan y 0
(c)

tan x

tan x

2. Solve the equation ( 0 360 ):

(a) cos tan
(b) sin tan
3. Suppose that a cos b and c sin d for some angle and some constants a, b, c
and d. Show that a 2 c 2 b 2 c 2 a 2 d 2 .
4. Let be any number that is in the domain of all six basic trigonometric functions.
Show that the natural logarithms of all six basic trigonometric functions of sum to
zero.

5. Express:
(a) 2 sinh x 3 cosh x in terms of e x and e x .
(b) 2 sinh 4 x 7 cosh 4 x in terms of e 4 x and e 4 x .
(c) 2e x e x in terms of sinh x and cosh x .
(d)

7e x
in terms of sinh x and cosh x , and then in terms of coth x .

logarithm.

7. A section of a bridge truss design is shown. Determine the total length of the beams
required to build the section, to the nearest tenth of a metre.

8. The exit from a restaurant kitchen has a pair of swinging doors that meet in the midde
of the doorway. Each door is three feet wide. A waiter needs to take a cart of plates
into the dining area from the kitchen. The cart is two feet wide.

(a) What is the minimum angle through which the doors must each be opened to
prevent the cart from hitting either door?
(b) If only one of the two doors could be opened, what is the minimum angle
through which the door must be opened to prevent the cart from hitting the door?
(c) If the pair of swinging doors were replaced by a single door the full width of the
opening, what is the minimum angle through which the door must be opened to
prevent the cart from hitting the door?
