Sustainability Certificate for American Car Parks

In July the Green Parking Council (GPC) announced in Las Vegas the first
seven American Car Parks receiving the Green Garage certification, a
comprehensive standard for the sustainability of existing and new parking
facilities. The Certificate includes 48 examined elements and covers topics
from the structure of the car park up to the applied technologies.
According to Paul Wessel, executive director of the GPC, with this certificate
the parking industry expresses to be part of the solution for global reduction of
CO2 emissions and the use of natural resources. "Cars, people and car parks
are getting smarter. Greening transforms parking facilities into enablers of
sustainable mobility." Sustainable car parks provide attention to energy-efficient
lighting, ventilation and wayfinding systems helping visitors faster finding
available parking spaces, charge stations for electric vehicles, bicycle stalls and
open source collaboration. This does not only benefit the environment. These
measures also lead to a reduction of operational costs compared to the
national average up to 25%.
Cao Dong, project manager for the Dutch Green Building Council is working on
the development of various BREEAM certification marks, including a mark for
parking garages.
