The story of the WEEE Man

Our reporter has travelled to
Cornwall to say Happy Birthday to the
WEEE Man!
The WEEE Man is a sculpture. Hes
called the WEEE Man because hes
made of old machines people dont
want or WEEE (Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment).
In 2004, the Royal Society of Arts
(RSA) wanted to teach people about
WEEE. They wanted to show how
much electrical equipment people
waste in their lifetime. They decided
to build a sculpture and they asked an
artist called Paul Bonomini to design it.
Paul created an enormous robot
and in April 2005 British people saw
the WEEE Man for the first time. The

sculpture is 7 metres tall and it weighs

3.3 tonnes. This is the same amount
of WEEE the average British person
throws away in their lifetime.
The average person throws away
5 fridges, 12 kettles, 3 washing
machines, 8 toasters, 8 irons, 35 mobile
phones, 8 computers, 4 keyboards,
23 keyboard mice and 6 TVs!
First the WEEE Man stood outside
City Hall in London, but hes now at
The Eden Project in Cornwall. Today is
his fifth birthday. Lots of people come
to see the sculpture every year.
Ive come to see the WEEE Man
because weve just done a project about
recycling at school, says schoolboy
Jack Taylor. Ive made a model of a

WEEE boy! Ive used food tins.

His schoolmate Tara Smith adds, I
havent made a model, but Ive painted
a picture of the WEEE Man. I think
hes really cool!
Ive visited the WEEE Man lots of
times, says Mary Magee from Oxford.
Ive just taken lots of photographs to
show my grandchildren. The WEEE
Man is very important because it has
taught people about recycling.
Her husband Bob Magee adds, Ive
just thrown away an old radio! But now
Ive seen the WEEE Man, I understand
that we shouldnt waste so much.
Quite right! Thank you WEEE Man!
Weve learnt a lot from you!

Hi Jilly,
Auntie Janet here! Im sending you a photo for your
art homework. Its an enormous street art sculpture
I saw in London yesterday. I saw it in the daytime,
but at 3 it can light up. The sculpture is 4.6
metres wide and 4 high. The main part of the
sculpture looks like plastic, but it isnt plastic. Its
made of 5 . At the moment its 6 , but it isnt
always the same colour. The paint and the lights
change colour.

Today Ive been to Covent Garden. Its a famous

part of London with a market, shops, restaurants
and the Royal Opera House. Covent Garden often
has street performers and I listened to a girl playing
a violin. She was very skilful and the music was
fantastic. I spoke to a cheerful artist, too. She was
painting a woman on a bicycle. There was a strong
smell of coffee in the square, so I went to a caf for
breakfast. Afterwards I walked around the market.
It has a large glass roof and its very beautiful. I
bought a book about London with lots of colourful
photos. The book has been very useful because
the weather has been dreadful this afternoon! Ive
stayed in the hotel and Ive nearly finished my
book. Its nearly dinner time now!

Knit the City is a group of four knitters who leave

their knitting in public places in London and call it
yarnstorming. Deadly Knitshade (not her real name)
started the group in 2009.
Where was the first yarnstorm?
The first yarnstorm was in London in Covent Garden,
where we covered a wooden barrier with colourful knitting.
Do you always knit covers for things?
No, we knit lots of different things from fruit to pirates.
Which knitted thing is your favourite?
My favourite is the biggest thing Ive knitted, a squid,
called Plarchie, which is made out of 160 plastic bags.
Its 8 metres long.
Is yarnstorming difficult?
Sometimes. We hung knitted hearts from a statue called
Eros in London, which is 7 metres above the ground. It
was very high up and very windy. Some people clapped
when we managed to do it.

3 Read the grammar table and learn.

Find more examples of relative
pronouns in the text.

Do people take your knitting?

Yes, but thats OK. We yarnstorm and then we take
photographs. After that people can take the knitting.
Once I got a photograph from a man who took
a knitted cat for his living room. Another man took
a knitted mushroom, which he gave to his daughter.
Do you only yarnstorm in London?
Well, we have just been to Berlin, in Germany, where
we left knitted sausages, so one day we might come
to your city, too!

Robert Bradford is a British artist. He

was born in London and has worked
in the UK and the United States. He
has been a painter, but now creates
large sculptures for public places,
including fire sculptures. Hes most
famous for large animal sculptures.
One of his earliest works is the Bee
Sculpture, which is in the Eden

He has made rabbits, dogs and

Andy Scott is a Scottish artist. He

including horses, birds and a dog.
One of his famous sculptures is called
Heavy Horse. Its 4.5 metres tall. Its

so more than 100,000 drivers on the
motorway see it every day.

Antoni Gaud was a Catalan architect

and artist. He was born in 1852 and
he died in 1926. He used ceramics,
stained glass, iron and wood in his
work. Gaud designed a park in
Barcelona called Park Gell. The
park has lots of stone structures and
some incredible buildings. Theres a
small house where Gaud once lived.
The house is now a museum. The
most famous sculpture in the park is
a dragon fountain. Its made of lots of

something funny for money. We all came to school in our
pyjamas! We wore them for the whole day. It was very funny
wearing nightclothes in the classroom and the playground
and some of our teachers wore pyjamas, too. We also did a
sponsored silence. We asked our friends and family to give us
some money to be quiet for 45 minutes. We couldnt say one
word! It was very difficult (especially for Jilly Bean)! Our
parents didnt think we could do it, but we did! Hurray!

An Ace Red Nose Day

The pupils of Ace School were very surprised yesterday
when their headmaster Mr Alistair McMaster (54) sat
in a bath of baked beans to raise money for Red Nose
Day! He sat in the beans for 15 minutes! said motherof-three Felicity Bean. The children thought it was
fantastic! Mr McMaster wasnt the only teacher raising
money. Miss Shanice London (33) wore a red wig all
day and sang pop songs at lunchtime. Shes totally
cool. said 10-year-old William Victory. We didnt

know she could sing like that! The school caretaker

MrBob Tidy (56) joined in too. He didnt forget to put
a red nose on the school mini bus for the special day.
He also came to school dressed as a clown and stood at
the school gate with a bucket to collect money.
Together the teachers raised 85 for Comic Relief.
