Charles Dickens is a famous writer in the English language. He wrote about the real world of
England and many of the people in his books were not rich, but poor and hungry.
Charles Dickens’s family lived in London and his father worked in an office. It was a good job,
but he always spent a lot of money and often there was no money to buy food. There were eight
children in the family, so life was hard.
Charles went to school and his teachers thought he was very clever. But when Charles was only
eleven, his father lost all his money and the family left their house. Charles got a job washing
bottles. He worked ten hours a day and he earned six shillings (30p) a week. Every night, after

JEANS

Two Americans, Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss, made the first jeans in 1923. Davis
bought cloth from Levi’s shop. He told Levi that he had a special way to make strong
trousers for workmen. The first jeans were blue. In 1965 jeans became fashionable for
women after they saw them in Vogue magazine. In the 1990’s Calvin Klein earned $12.5
million a week from jeans. Levi Strauss asked Jacob Davis to come to San Francisco to
oversee the first manufacturing facility for "waist overalls," as the original jeans were
known as. The two-horse brand design was first used in 1886. The red tab attached to the
left rear pocket was created in 1936 as a means of identifying Levi’s jeans at a distance.
All are registered trademarks that are still in use. The next time you see someone
wearing a pair of Levi’s jeans, remember that these pants are a direct descendant of that
first pair made back in 1873. That year, two visionary immigrants — Levi Strauss and
Jacob Davis — turned denim, thread and a little metal into what has become the most

MEALS IN BRITAIN
A typical full English breakfast is a very big meal — sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes,
mushrooms and of course toast. But nowadays many people don’t have time to eat all this and
just have toast, or sometimes fruit and yoghurt. The typical breakfast drink is tea, which people
have with cold milk. Some people have coffee made with just hot water. Many visitors to Britain
think this coffee is horrible!
For many people lunch is a quick meal. In cities there are a lot of sandwich bars, where office
workers can choose the kind of bread they want, either brown or white, and then all sorts of
salad and meat or fish to go in the sandwich. Pubs often serve good, cheap food, both hot and
cold. School-children can have a hot meal at school, but many just take a snack from home — a
sandwich, a drink, some fruit, and perhaps some crisps.
People eat their evening meal quite early, often at about six o’clock. A typical dinner is meat and
vegetables, especially on Sundays, when all the family eat together.

Meet the singers
Ed,27, his brother Ginger, 25, and their friend Will, 26, are three young men who decided to
leave their comfortable homes without any money or mobile phones and walk round the whole
of Britain, in all seasons, in good and bad weather. They are singing for their supper and
sleeping anywhere they can find, in woods, fields, and sometimes houses- when people offer
hospitality.
Ed and Ginger started singing with Will when they were all at school together in Canterbury.
After school, Ed went to srudy art in Paris and London and became an artist; Ginger became a
gardener, and Will a bookseller. They were still friends and liked walking together, but weren't
very happy with their lives. One day they had an idea. 'Why don't we start walking and just not
stop?' And so they did. They love the freedom and the simple life. Walking and singing are
simple human activities in a busy, stressful world. They sing in streets, pubs, and market
squares. Sometimes people they meet teach them new songs.
Why are they doing this?
'People ask us why we're doing this, and we don't really have an answer,' says Will.
'It's a great life and we're learning so much on our journey.' Their families worry about their
fufures, but they don't. Last yeg they starteda website: w.w.w.awalkaroundbritain.com and
they made a CD of 16 their songs. This year they are going to make podcasts to tell more stories

traditional country activities The future looks good.
