Expressing
Breastmilk

Expressing milk is
useful to:

When his mother goes or goes to work


Feed a low birth weight baby who cannot
breast feed
Feed a sick baby who cannot suckle
enough
Keep up the supply of breast milk when a
mother or baby is ill

Expressing milk is
useful to:

Prevent leaking when a mother is away


from her baby
To help with breast health conditions (e.g
engorgment)

How to stimulate the


oxytocin reflex

Help mother psychologically;


- Build her confidence
- Try to reduce sources of pain and
anxiety
- Help her to have good
thoughts/feelings

How to stimulate the

Help mother practically. Advise her to;


Sit quietly and privately or with a supportive
friend
Hold her baby with skin to skin contact if
possible
Warm her breast
Stimulate her nipples
Massage or strokes her breast slightly
Ask her to rub her back

How to express breast

Wash hand thoroughly


Sit or stand comfortably in front of the
container
Put thumb on the breast above the nipple
and areola and her first finger on the
breast below the nipple and areola,
opposite the thumb
Press thumb and first finger slightly
inwards towards the chest wall

Press and release, press and release


Press the areola in the same way from the
sides to make sure that milk is express
from all segments of the breats
