TYPES ' O ERRORS

ANTECEDENT ERROR
The noun to which the pronoun refers to is known as its antecedent. The pronoun must have a clear antecedent.
Whenever there is an ambiguity regarding a clear antecedent for a pronoun, there would be an error.
Eg. After putting the disk in the cabinet, Mayank sold it.
Can you make out what is the antecedent of the It in the above sentence? That is, what does
It refer to?
As there is an ambiguity, it is an incorrect usage.
The correct usage would be:
After putting the disk in the cabinet, Mayank sold the cabinet.
Eg. The supervisors told the workers that they would receive a bonus.
Can you infer to whom do They refer to?

The correct usage would be:
The supervisors told the workers that they themselves are expecting a bonus.
Or
The supervisors complimented the workers on receiving a bonus.

PERSON, GENDER , NUMBER ERROR

The pronoun must agree with its noun in gender, number and person.
Eg. The political party must ensure that their followers be intimated about the change in leadership.
See how Their is an incorrect usage of pronoun here, as the noun to which it hopes to refer is a singular noun.
Hence the correct usage here would be:
The political party must ensure that its followers be intimated about the change in leadership.
THE SUBJECT/OBJECT ERROR
This is my favorite kind of error, precisely because it takes the maximum proficiency to locate and correct it.
It is a must that the pronoun must follow the form of its noun. Hence if we intend to replace a subjective noun with a
pronoun, we must ensure that we are using a subjective pronoun in its place and similarly for replacing an objective noun.
The trick here is to clearly understand what are objective and what subjective pronouns are. For this, you must refer to the
table above.
Eg. Between you and I, no conclusion can be reached.
Notice that I has been incorrectly used here. Why? Because you do not use a subjective form of noun/pronoun with
preposition (between).
The correct usage here would be:
Between you and me, no conclusion can be reached.
*If you want to find out whether a noun/pronoun should be in a subjective or objective form, always remember that a
subjective noun/pronoun needs a verb. If there is no verb available then you cannot use a subjective noun/pronoun.*

SOME FINAL COMMANDMENTS

1. When 2 or more singular nouns are joined by and, the pronoun used for them must be plural.
Eg. Ruma and Hari worked hard. They have now gone home.
*But when 2 singular nouns joined by and refer to the same person/thing, the pronoun used must be singular.
Eg. The secretary & treasurer is negligent of his duties.* (I recognized that the treasurer and secretary are the same person
because a single determiner is used (the)... were the sentence written like: The secretary and the treasurer, then it would
have meant 2 persons.)

2. When 2 singular nouns joined by and are preceded by each and every, the pronoun must be singular.
Eg. Each student must fill his form.

3. No reflexive pronoun can be used until the subjective noun/pronoun has been mentioned earlier.
Eg. You will hurt yourself.
