Commander Chapman was in the service for

four years and worked as a
radio communications technician in the Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict.
American Legion committee
members were Glen Hayward, Don Kronh, Jerry
Young, Tim Edwards and
Vic Weber.

This interview and

article was part of Hunters Teen
Read Week Project. He will
receive a free book from The
Idaho Library Commission.

We have 17 members in the club this year.

Each month we celebrate

members birthdays and
staff members birthdays
by giving them personalized birthday cards and
coupons from our Musher
Java Caf.
Our Teen Read
Week Activities and party
are related to our theme
Turning Dreams Into
Reality @ Your Library.
Some members will create
an activity that will help
them turn their dreams into
reality. They will each
receive a free book.

What is the difference between a challenge or banning? A

challenge is an attempt to
remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or
group. A banning is the
removal of those materials. Challenges do
not simply involve a person expressing a point of
view; rather, they are an
attempt to remove material from the curriculum
or library, thereby restricting the access of others. Due to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, students and
other concerned citizens,

most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the
school curriculum or library collection.
This week the
High School Reading
Club had a display in the
library on the Banned &
Challenged Books. It was
our way of showing our
support for our First
Amendment Rights.
Mrs. Cobble
showed several childrens
books to elementary
classes and read one of
the books on the list to the
them. Their favorite book
was The Giving Tree by
Shel Silverstein.
The
students loved this book
and Ms. Bridget Smiths
5th grade class had a
lively discussion about
why the book should remain in libraries and
schools.

Hunter Brooks
interviewed Commander Ron Chapman, who gave a
speech at the
POW/MIA Ceremony
honoring
Prisoners of War and those
Missing in Action. It was
held September 19 at the
American Legion Hall. The
entire school attended the
ceremony to show their respect and honor those service
men.

During World War

II millions of persons were
taken prisoner under widely
varying circumstances and
experienced treatment that
ranged from excellent to
barbaric.
