Dear Hiring Committee:
I am inquiring about the position posted for the Student Success Leader in the
American Indian Student Service Department advertised through UNM Jobs website
on August 17. My name is Aspen Johnson and I am currently a freshman at the
University of New Mexico pursuing a degree in Biology. I have strong communication
skills and a great work ethic that will make me a strong candidate for this position.
Furthermore, my participation and involvement with the department makes me an
excellent match for this department.
The American Indian Student Services department has been a great resource for me
and has been a warm and welcoming place where I have spent much of my time. I
am interested in the Student Success Leader position because I want to give back to
the department. Furthermore, I want to be a part of the department who has been
there so many times for me as a student by helping and welcoming all other
students who utilize this resource.
I bring many skills that qualify me for this position. I am always on time and prompt,
detailed orientated, organized, a critical thinker and I manage time very well. Along
with these hardworking skills I am enthusiastic, a team player, self-motivating and I
have excellent communication skills. I am very familiar with computers, the internet
and the micro-soft office programs. I am a quick learner and approach every
challenge with a positive attitude. I know how to operate excel and make spread
sheets. Along with that I am familiar with photo-shop computer programs. I believe I

Through this department I have been able to volunteer my time to the events
hosted by the department along with helping the Albuquerque community. Through
these volunteer opportunities I have been exposed to many different social
situations. I listen well and follow directions accurately. Through the activities
offered by the service I have been exposed to situations where I have had to step
up and be a leader while at the same time be a team player. Being able to be selfsufficient and self-motivated along with a team member mentality, which I have,
makes me a perfect match for this position.
During the summer of 2014 I was a part of the 4 week academic enrichment
program held by this service. During this time I became very familiar with this
department and over the fall semester I spent much of my time in the office. I am
very familiar with the responsibilities, and expectations that Student Success
Leaders are held to. My friendliness, outgoing attitude and strong passion for

helping others has helped me not only excel in my studies, but show that I make a
great candidate for this position.
Time management is a very important quality that I value, I believe having the
ability to prioritize important tasks is key to being successful. To effectively balance
my full-time academic schedule and excel in the Student Success Leader position I
plan to lay out a schedule and follow it. Every day I keep detailed schedules that
help me successfully accomplish goals and deadlines I have. I know how to
determine priorities and to make time for projects that will take time to complete.
With my time management and sense of priorities I will be able to find time for both
my school work and duties on the clock. Along with this time management skill, in
order to be successful with both academics and this position I will work hard to
ensure I have done everything in my ability to do the best job possible. My hard
work and time management skills will be the key to my success for balancing both
school and this position.
