    Nicolaus Copernicus was a Renaissance-era mathematician and astronomer born in 1473 in Poland who developed a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the center. He published his theory of heliocentrism in 1543 in his book "On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres", contradicting the prevailing geocentric view of Ptolemy that the Earth was the center of the universe and challenging the teachings of the Catholic Church. Copernicus died later that year of a stroke at age 70.
