Common Compounds

1. Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (NaHCO3)

Ex. Baking Powder - Baking powder is a dry chemical leavening agent, a mixture of a carbonate or
bicarbonate and a weak acid, and is used for increasing the volume and lightening the texture of baked
goods.

2. Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Ex. Table Salt - Common salt is a mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride, a chemical
compound belonging to the larger class of salts; salt in its natural form as a crystalline mineral is known
as rock salt or halite.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2)

Ex. Mouthwash - Usually mouthwashes are an antiseptic solution intended to reduce the microbial
load in the oral cavity, although other mouthwashes might be given for other reasons such as for
their analgesic, anti-inflammatory or anti-fungal action.

4. Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl)

Ex. Household Bleach - refers to a number of chemicals which remove color, whiten or disinfect,
often by oxidation.

5. Acetyl Salicylic Acid (C9H804)

Ex. Aspirin - to reduce fever and relieve mild to moderate pain from conditions such as
muscle aches, toothaches, common cold, and headaches. It may also be used to
reduce pain and swelling in conditions such as arthritis. Aspirin is known as a salicylate
and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Elements
1. Metals is a material that is typically hard, opaque, shiny and has good electrical and
thermal conductivity.
Examples:
Aluminum
Copper

2. Metalloids is a chemical element with properties in between, mixture, those metals

and non-metals.
Examples:

Arsenic

Silicon

3. Non-Metals is a chemical element that mostly lacks metallic attributes, poor

conductor of heat.
Examples:
Sulfur

Phosphorus

Mixtures
Examples: 1. Homogeneous Mixture - Water itself is an example of ahomogeneous mixture. It
often contains dissolved minerals and gases, but these are dissolved throughout the water. Tap
water and rain water are both homogeneous, even though they may have different levels of
dissolved minerals and gases.

Coffee

Glass of Juice

2. Heterogeneous Mixtures is made of different substances that remain physically separate.

Examples:
Bowl of salad

Oil and Water
