ENGR 836: Spring 2014

Design Project #1

The above figure shows the plan of a 3 storied special steel moment frame structure
located at 100 Pine St., San Francisco, CA. As a designer you are required to come up
with the most economical design and do the following:

Size the moment frame beams and columns (assume W14) in the longitudinal and
transverse directions using the equivalent static lateral procedure of ASCE 7. Use
reduced beam sections and assume the following loads (both gravity and seismic)
o Roof: 95 psf
o 3rd : 90 psf
o 2nd : 92 psf
Consider regular office occupancy live load of 50 psf. Assume that the columns
frame into 24X24 concrete grade beams with EC = 1800 ksi located around the
perimeter.
Design a typical seismic column in the transverse direction and one in the
longitudinal direction

Design a typical interior Reduced Beam Section connection at the second floor in
the transverse direction. Perform all the checks required in the AISC document
for prequalified connections.
Design a typical lateral bracing for moment frame beams in the longitudinal
direction.
Check the diaphragm shear at the second floor for seismic forces in the transverse
direction. Assume that the floor lab consists of 18 Ga Verco W3 formlok with 31/4 lightweight concrete topping. In addition the moment frame beams will have
3/4 dia x 5-1/2 long studs at 12 o/c except at the locations prohibited by RBS
requirements.
Assuming the foundation consist of pile caps with allowable load capacities as
given below, calculate the number of piles for the entire project. Consider that the
interior pile caps are connected by 18x18 concrete beams with a 10 structural
slab on grade.
o Compressive Capacity : 200 kips (consider 1/3 increase for short term
loading)
o Tension Capacity : 100 kips

Note: Your job as an engineer is to come up with a design that yields the lowest steel
weight. As a rule of thumb, moment frames typically weigh around 15 psf (total weight
of all seismic beams and columns/total floor area of all the floors).
