Parallel editing is a technique where two unrelated scenes are cut together to show that they are occurring simultaneously, such as in The Godfather where shots of a baptism are cut with scenes of mob murders. The document discusses several other films that use parallel editing techniques - 500 Days of Summer uses split screens to show different perspectives of the same event, The Thomas Crown Affair uses both split screens and parallel shots, and Quantum of Solace speeds up its pacing and quickens shots to match the intensifying action and background music.

What is parallel editing? Parallel editing is where two scenes are cut together because they are happening at the same time, for example in the God father there is a shot of Michele in a church having his daughter baptised but at the same time there are shot of other mob bosses being murder. The director, Francis Ford Coppola, most likely chose these two scenes to put together because they are very contradicting of each other. In one scene Michelle Corlioni is shown in the church getting his daughter baptised, in these scenes the priest is talking about renouncing Satan but then in these other scenes it shown people being murdered.
500 Days of summer
The film 500 days of summer used split screen to tell the story from two different prospective of the same person, it does this by showing what the character wanted to happen and what actually happened, this lets the view know that he is a bit of a loser and spends his time dreaming instead of actually doing like most people. The Thomas crown affair In the Thomas crown affair as well as split screen, parallel shots are also used, they are used so that you know that these two things are happening at the sometime and the split screen is so you can see whats happening. Quantum of solace In the film quantum of solace the pacing in it helps the setting by being slow at first so that you know where the character is and then as it goes on and gets more into the action the paces speeds up and the shots are quicker and quicker, it also matches the music in the back ground so its all in one beat.
