Parallel editing (godfather)

What is parallel editing?

Parallel editing is the technique of alternating two or more scenes that
often happen simultaneously but in different locations. For example the
baptism murders in the godfather.

What two different stories are we being shown at the

same time?
The two stories being shown in the clip are a scene of Michael having his
daughter baptised at a church, simultaneously there is a scene of mob
bosses being shot and killed.

Why did the director, Francis Ford Coppola, choose these

two, very different, sequences?
The director chose these two specific scenes as theyre very different and
contradict each other which makes the technique more effect as in one
scene they talk about Satan and then in the other scene Michaels
daughter is being baptised

500 days of summer

The film 500 days of summer uses split screen to tell the story from two
different perspectives of the same person, one perspective that is an
expectation of what should happen whereas the other perspective is the
actual reality to what the person was expecting therefore they play
simultaneously and you can clearly see the difference as events unfold
very differently from both perspectives.

The Thomas crown affair

In the Thomas crown affair as well as split screen, parallel shots are also
used so that you know these two things shown in the splitcreens are
happening at the same time and the splitcreens is used to show the
difference

Pacing -quantum of solace

In the film quantum of solace the pacing throughout the film helps and is
key as it helps with setting its slow enough for you to understand the
whole situation and it gradually gets faster and speeds up as the

character gets into action to intensify the situation so you feel it the shots
increase in speed and quantity also the music speeds up and sticks to a
certain beat to match the action
