Kuleshov effect

The kuleshov effect is a film editing montage

effectively demonstrated by the soviet film maker
lev kuleshov hence why the effect is named after
the film maker. The effect is of two different shots
one of the characters and one of the objects they
are looking at. The character shall pull a certain
facial expression based on their reaction or opinion
to the object theyre looking at, this effect is very
misleading and can push people to make
judgements of characters when they may misread
what theyre seeing.
In his experiment, Kuleshov cut the shot of an actor
with shots of three different subjects: a girl in a
coffin, a hot plate of soup, and a pretty woman
lying in a couch. The footage of the actor was the
same expressionless gaze. Yet the audience raved
his performance, saying first he looked sad, then
hungry, then lustful. This shows the detail in which
the audience got from the effect some examples
its used in frequently are the space odyssey and
psycho.
