Parallel editing The Godfather

What is parallel editing?

Parallel editing is when there is main scene that is happening in genuine
timing, whilst there are small scenes or clips interspersed with this scene.
There could one or more scene that flashes back and forth between these
clips and the continuous video. These clips could be flashback or scenes
that are happening at the same time as the main clip, it could be parallel.

What two different stories are we being shown at the same time?
The first story, the main clip that is shown in genuine timing throughout
the scene is of a man who is becoming the godfather of a child who is
being baptised within the church. To do this he is renouncing his sins.
The second story is shown through 5 short clips of men being targeted and
killed by other men. It is clear through the slips that the murders were
planned and most likely by the man who is renouncing his sin to become a
godfather.

Why did the director, Francis Ford Coppola, choose these two, very
different, sequences?
Francis Ford Coppola used these two very different scenes in The
Godfather to highlight the juxtaposition of the two opposite clips, as the
main clip shows Michael renouncing his sin to an innocent human child in
a church, the house of god. Yet the other clips are of murders, an act
against god, and one of the 10 commandments, orchestrated by Micheal.
