    Rentap was a famous Iban warrior and leader in Sarawak who fought against British expansion led by James Brooke in the 1840s-1860s. He attacked a fort built by Brooke at Nanga Skrang in 1853 to prevent Iban access to the sea. Over the following years, Rentap battled Brooke's forces as they attacked his forts at Bukit Sadok and other locations, until he was finally defeated by Brooke in 1861. Rentap escaped further conflict and died of old age in 1870. In recognition of his brave defense of his land and people, Rentap was declared a hero of Sarawak by the Sarawak government in 1993.
