Hidden Curriculum Activity


Alongside the formal curriculum within
educational establishments exists a
hidden curriculum. This refers to values,
attitudes and principles which are
implicitly conveyed to students.

The hidden curriculum


represents the things that
children learn while at
school that are not a part
of the formal curriculum.
As future teachers,
leaders and managers we
need to remember that
we can shape the hidden
curriculum.

Each organization on a local,


regional and global level has a
unique hidden curriculum.
Longstreet and Shane (1993) offer a commonly accepted
definition for this term.
. . . the "hidden curriculum," which refers to the kinds of
learnings children derive from the very nature and
organizational design of the public school, as well as from
the behaviors and attitudes of teachers and
administrators.... " 46
