PBS: The Blood Spatter Lab: The Effect of Height on the Diameter of Blood Spatter
The idea of this lab is to determine the relationship between the height of blood being
dropped to the diameter of the bloodstain. Anna was hit while standing or if she was hit on her
way down. Blood typing and DNA evidence can provide information as well as bloodstain
patterns at the crime scene. Bloodstain patterns can provide information on possible weapons
used and where the blood came from. Height from which the blood falls be found based on the
diameter of the bloodstain. We can use this information to find whether or not Anna was
standing or was hit on her way down. If her blood drops were fifteen millimeters in diameter
then the blood was approximately dropped from one hundred centimeters.
Materials:
Pipette
Meter stick
Simulated blood
White paper
Paper towels
Procedure: We measured height with the meter stick in cm. When the blood hit the
paper we measured the diameter of the stain. We continued to do this process 10 times to
show consistency.
Conclusion: In the end my hypothesis was correct. The diameter of the blood stain
increased as you raised the height in which the blood was dropped from. The blood came
from Anna when she was possibly coming down.
