OptiX OSN 6800A/3800A

Huawei OTN-based Switched WDM

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.

With a rapid growth in the demand for broadband services and the development of new communications
technologies, the transport network is faced with a challenge of transmission and grooming of huge number of
services. In the conventional WDM system, only point-to-point transmission is supported, and the DXC/SONET or
routers are used to perform service grooming. With the approach of the age of T bit services, there is an abrupt
increase in requirements for the grooming capability of the DXC/SONET and routers, making the access capability
of the DXC/SONET and routers declined. In this case, operators have to add more equipment and ports, which adds
much to the cost. In addition, the attendant problems, such as delay and jitter result in serious impact on the quality
of services (QoS).AS a result, the traditional WDM networking mode is not suitable for transmission and grooming of a
huge number of services.
To focus on the challenges faced by customers, Huawei has pioneered the OTN-based switched WDM equipment,
OptiX OSN 6800A/3800A dedicated for the North American market, based on a comprehensive analysis on the
development trend of the transport network. The OptiX OSN 6800A/3800A is designed in a brand new architecture
and has integrated with the management and protection functions of the next generation switched WDM platform for
the WDM transport, OTN, ROADM, 40G/100G, and SONET-like networks. It is more suitable for IP-based broadband
services because of its flexible structure arrangement.

OTN, the best choice for transmitting broadband services

ITU-T G.709-compliant OTN provides the function to monitor and manage multi-wavelength optical networks, which
improves the network security effectively, and supports end-to-end grooming at both the electrical and optical layers,
making the network more flexible.
The OTN-based WDM transport platform realizes transmission of large capacity services with high flexibility and
security, which makes it more adaptable for the development trend of the All-IP transport network.

Non-blocking grooming
Optical grooming: Supports two/four/nine-dimensional ROADM grooming, realizing quick connections of wavelength
services and broadcast of services.
Electrical grooming: Supports GE/ODU1/ODU2 service grooming, realizing grooming and regeneration of wavelength/
sub-wavelength services.
Optical/electrical cross-connection integration: The plane cross-connection at both the optical and electrical layers
helps to minimize the total cost of operation (TCO) and deploy services quickly. In addition, it solves the wavelength
blocking problem, guarantees non-blocked connections in the network, and improves the bandwidth utilization.
The architecture in which the tributary unit is separated from the line unit realizes quick configuration and upgrade of
the services on the client side and line side. This safeguards investment of operations and reduces spare parts.

Maturely commercialized 40G Solution

10G/40G hybrid transmission: The OptiX OSN 6800A/3800A supports transmission of a mixed service of 10G and 40G
services. This realizes smooth upgrade from the 10G system to the 40G system, and fast application of 10G and 40G
services in a one system. In this manner, it improves bandwidths of the network.
The OptiX OSN 6800A/3800A supports customized 40G solutions, which provides flexibility in selection of the DRZ,
or eDQPSK coding based on the number of wavelengths and fibers as well as the cost of the network, which helps
operators to build a network with low cost and thus saves investment on the network.
The 40G solution is realized by either accessing 4 x 10G services or 1 x 40G services. In addition, inverse multiplexing
of 40G services into 4 x 10G services is supported. Operators can choose the most favorable 40G solution to decrease
the network cost.
Leading position in commercial use: The 40G technology has been widely used in America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific
Region. The wide commercial use of the 40G technology eliminates operators' worries about building a 40G network
and helps them deploy a 40G network quickly.
Huawei has successfully developed 100G/100GE WDM prototype. It supports smooth upgrades from 10G/40G
technologies.

Reliable protection mechanism

The conventional WDM equipment cannot provide various protection modes, because it has no powerful crossconnect module and is not applied with any switching protocol. The OTN-based WDM equipment, however, supports
various alarm detection methods, provides dedicated automatic protection switching (APS) overheads, and supports
electrical cross-connection matrix. This lays a solid foundation for various protection modes.
The OptiX OSN 6800A/3800A intelligent optical transport platform supports electrical protection modes, such as SWSNCP and ODU-SPRING in addition to all the protection modes that the conventional WDM equipment provides.

Easy to manage and maintain

Based on various OTN overheads, the OptiX OSN 6800A/3800A can provide SONET-like management and monitoring
capabilities. This enables the network to support various detection methods and automatic adjustment methods and
adds much to the transparency of the network. As a result, a fault can be located quickly, and the security of the
network is enhanced. This eventually reduces the cost of operation and maintenance to a great extent.
In terms of the detection methods, the OSA board provides the function to monitor optical power of a channel, center
wavelength, OSNR, and spectral diagram of the entire network in addition to the function for remotely measuring
spectral parameters in real time; the PRBS function enables the OTU to achieve fast self-check and determines the
performance of a channel quickly; the alarm filtering function filters alarms based on the analysis of alarm dependency
so as to locate a fault quickly.

OptiX OSN series products, realizing end-to-end configuration from the access layer to the
backbone layer and quick deployment of the entire network
The OptiX OSN1800/3800A/6800A/8800A series covers every layer of a network. All their service boards (except
for the service board of the OptiX OSN 1800) share the same management platform, based on which end-to-end
connections between layers of the network can be configured quickly. As a result, the network cost is decreased.
